I am looking for a new scope for my Browning A-bolt 300. wsm. This gun will be used for big game such as moose, bear, whitetail, mule, caribou and this year elk. The guy who owns the property i hunt on told me to expect longer shots on both the deer and the elk. I have been looking for a new scope for sometime and for everything i want and to keep it under 1000 dollars, the vortex viper pst really seems to shine. I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on this scope for big game hunting and shooting out to distances around 600 yards

If you are going to be using the scope primairly for hunting, I might suggest for you to take a look at the Viper HS riflescopes coming out this summer... They are basically PST's designed for the hunter.

I agree. They've got some pretty interesting features and will trend towards being quite a bit cheaper.

well see i want to get into long range shooting, targets and hunting. This rifle is my main purpose hunting rifle but i also use it as the main purpose target rifle. I just thought i might as well put the money out and get a Tactical scope for long range hunting and shooting. Not just a hunting scope more a less the Viper HS compared to PST

Can you elaborate a little on what you mean by target shooting?

If you're going to setup in the prone and drill 600-800 yards targets you'll gain next to nothing from the tactical scope other than the benefit of being able to match your reticle to hits and adjust accordingly off spotter marks if you happen to have them. Perhaps you may have a spotter spotting misses with a mil reticle and he can call out adjustments for you.

SFP with non matching turret/reticle is still fine for that type of shooting though, and really not all that confusing.

However, if you're going to be engaging movers, or changing focus between shots/varying ranges of targets/shooting matches you'll probably find the FFP worthwhile.

Personally I've found FFP to be simpler, and I learned SFP first. I'm pretty comfortable I could use either now, but would rather have the FFP especially at matches. There's a definite convenience to it that you won't get from the SFP.

It comes in at around 300$ or so more than their hunting lineup I believe though so I can't really recommend you spend that if you're not sure you need it.

To quantify though: For hunting big game, and shooting out to 600 yards the PST FFP should perform admirably at both tasks assuming the quality is as expected. Of course these scopes aren't really out in the field yet so your guess is as good as anyones. I handled one and it seemed nice enough to entice the money from my wallet though, and I've no doubt Vortex will be standing behind their product all the way which inspires some confidence in the purchase.

You noticed that too.

Courage wolf makes some excellent points, very good council. I have the scope in question and it has become one of my favorites if not the favorite. It will do tactical style shooting very well, and while mine is on a .223 (not a big game rifle) I'm sure from my experiences that it would do well there as well. Good luck with your project.
