I called Leupold the other day and they admitted something I never thought they would. (if the guy knew what he was talking about). I called to ask the difference between the 2 scopes. He basically told me it was just the knobs. He said I could send the VX3 in and get the M1 Knobs put on it and it would actually be the same as the MK4. I don't own a MK4 so I can't say right or wrong on this. What's everybodys thoughts. IF so then why not buy a VX3, put the knobs on it and save a couple of hundred dollars???

Re: VX3 and MK4 same thing?

Comparing the specs of the VX3 to the Mark 4 there are some differences with respect to the dimensions, leading me to believe they are not identical.

One thing that jumped out at me was the difference in weight, 468g for the VX3 and 624g for the Mark 4, about 33% more. I can't imagine that is only in the knobs. It might be more robust.

Re: VX3 and MK4 same thing?

The variable MK4s started life as Varix 3 tacticals. These were exactly what you were told VX3s with knobs and reticles. They shamelessly rebaged them as MK4s to take advantage of the name power of the outstanding fixed MK4s.

The variable MK4s (VX3s) have never come close to the true MK4s in quality or performance. They are ok but IMO overpriced the fixed MK4s are still a very very good scope.

The un-tacticool gold stripe is on the VX3 series.

Even my 2" longer VXIII LR/T weighs 2oz less then the MK4 in the above link. The MK4 has got to be heavier duty!

Leupold doesn't have a stellar record of providing solid intel when asked about their product and/or services. I've had the luxury of being told one thing about a service offered in an email inquiry, then verifying it on the phone prior to sending my scope in, only to have scope returned with just a once over and cleaning becuse the service I confirmed TWICE with tech wasn't available........

Re: VX3 and MK4 same thing?

He told me they had the same glass and the same internal mechanisms
So even they the what and dimisions are different, if what he said is true then they are close enough alike to save the couple of hundreed bucks. I always thought MK4 had some kinda special tracking mechanism in them that made them truer/more precise. Guess I was wrong
