Im in process of acquiring a Leupold Vari-X II tactical 3-9x40 for a good price. Is it a pretty decent for shooting up to 500 yds?

I ran a VXII Tactical 3-9 with duplex for a long time. Ran the scope out to 400yds with no problem. I didn't have any other place I could shoot any further at the time.
I sold it since the power ring is a bitch to turn when it's cold out. Only complaint on the scope.

Does the Leupy have mildot reticle?Target turrets?The reticle isnt as important but the target turrets are.The Super Sniper will have alot more of elevation to play with,but if your only goin 500 you should be ok.Super Sniper is hard to beat for $300

It has the target turrets, but it is just a duplex reticle. It's the real deal "black ring" tactical model. lol

I had one with a duplex ret. it is a capable scope for your application. I now have the newer 3-9 PR on a 5.56 and it works good for that rifle, I built it for shooting 50-500Y distaces. It is a good scope for practical targets. I have had SS scopes but not at the same time to compare them side by side. IMO they are both good choices for new shooters or those extra rifles that need optics.
