Okay so I'd like to buy my first gun in a few days here (went to an intro course and loved it!)

Thoughts on the P99 as a beginners gun? It'd be used primarily for practicing grouping at no more than 5o yards or so/home defense.

Also, does anyone know where to find a new one (.40sw) in military green? Seems to be impossible to find...
I live in California

Re: Walther P99

In AS, it's not what I'd call a beginner's gun, but I wouldn't want a QA or a DAO model. The AS offers bells and whistles (decocker, three trigger modes: http://www.handgunforum.net/walther/7631-walther-p99-trigger-systems.html} that might be beyond a beginner's easy ability to remain focused.

Get it in 9MM, as the .40 S&W rocks that polymer frame harder than you probably really want, avoid 1st Generation (ski ramp in the middle of the bottom of the trigger guard) models, don't worry about it being or not being OD, and why in the hell are you intent on practicing at any more than 25 yards? 7 to 15 makes a lot more sense.

P99Q if you could get it. Rail, grip, ambi everything like the PPQ, but with the second strike capabilities and the decocker of the P99. Last I knew it was Euromil and Europopo-only, and neither the PPQ nor the P99Q are on fhe Cali-okay list, anyway.

Re: Walther P99

First handgun I bought was a P99 DAO in .40. I wasn't hip to the other models when I bought it. That being said I still have it. Have never had an issue with it. The trigger gets better with use.

The only DAO or Glock-like (pretensioned striker) trigger that I cared for at all was the LEM P2000Sk, and I couldn't deal with the magazine release on that. I know what you mean about initial "grit" and 99 triggers -- they feel at first like they're packed in half-used cat litter.

Re: Walther P99

The P99 did not leave good memories behind for me. I think that after some experience and knowledge in the models out there, I would have a slightly better experience. But not by much.

I had one of the earlier generations (dunno when they started)in QA. I had to play with the front sight posts to get it sighted in, none of the backstraps made it comfortable for me to keep proper grip/finger placement on the trigger, it did not feed JHP ammo well, and the trigger was gritty. I know there are models with better triggers, and I am sure there have been some design fixes, but the other issues are probably still there, and I have found better models.

For a first time buyer on a pistol, there are better options.

Pistol choice based on individual fit and comfort is purely subjective, even if objectively we know that there are some that are just about generally unloveable, leading to the question of why they were produced anyway.

As I said before, I wouldn't choose QA or DAO for myself, but that's based on experience and ability. I carry the P99 AS, and feel no qualms about carrying in SA mode, or placing it into SA mode from DA, but I think that that might not ba appropriate for someone with zero training and undeveloped situational awareness. For them, the other triggers are better, and yes, Walther P99<span style="font-style: italic">x</span> offerings have improved through several generations in eliminating earlier flaws.

Re: Walther P99

Thanks for the advice guys, appreciated.
Based on feedback/more research I think a 9mm/AS will suit me fine.
Also..
Why is this gun so difficult to find? I simply cannot find it w/ the military green accents at all. In fact I've only found a few online stores that have the P99 in stock at all. I may have to switch from the gun I want just because I can't find the dang thing.

Please let me know if anyone can find a new P99 9mm AS (15rd) in any color!

Re: Walther P99

Look for WAP77011. That's the specific model number. I think Able Ammo might have it in stock, but I know that Bud's doesn't.

I don't think you're catching on to the other people who were hinting at you earlier, so allow me to help.

You don't seem to know what is or isn't legal, so stop searching for a gun and search for your local gun laws. Once you realize what you can actually own, then starting picking out a firearm.

Um, follow your own advice...?
Anyway I think because they're dicontinued they're difficult to find. I may have to go used - I saw a used one just the other day in a local shop.

They are? Better read through:

From what I understand, they're coming in in limited quantities, but I'll check with someone over in Ulm for absolutely straight scoop and get back to the thread.

Ah well *insert foot in mouth*...I read a few times on various forums and even on a website they had discontinued it - and since they seem to be virtually impossible to find new anywhere I assumed they in fact were. Definitely get back to us on the scoop though.

Okay, here's the scoop, as of three days ago:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Hi Xxxx,
the P99 is still in production for the US market and imported by S&W and Earls Repair Service Inc.

Earl is a little bit more expensive...service has it´s price.

Hope you are fine! What about your rifle project?

He works at Walther, and I trust him.
