My brother in law has a 300 win mag he loves to hunt with and is running out of his stock pile of 165 gr win fail safes and I offered to try and reproduce it by reloading for him. Guess i am looking for any and all info that will help me get this done. Thanks for your time Seth

I believe Winchester replaced (no longer makes them) the Failsafe bullet with the XP3 bullet around 2006 or so. I don't believe you can get the XP3 bullets to reload. The closest available bullet would have been the Barnes MRX bullet. MRX Bullet | Barnes Bullets The MRX has a Tungsten insert similar to the Failsafe and XP3 bullet. The Barnes MRX is an expensive bullet and Barnes discontinued this bullet in 2011. You might find old stocks of them.

You'd be better off going to another bullet. There's a lot of great bullets out there. The Barnes TSX line are good bullets. I like their new Tipped TSX bullets. Swift makes the Scirocco II, a great bullet. Nosler has their proven "Partition" line of bullets along with their new all Copper "E Tip" and their Accubond line. Hornady has their version of the all Copper bullet called the "GMX" and they have a bonded bullet called the "Interbond".

It depends on the Game you BIL is going after. If it's Moose and Elk, he needs a bullet that's going to give deep penetration. Deer sized game, bullets that expand quicker. You just need to decide on a bullet.

Too many variables to give a one bullet fits all answer. For a friend of mine for his Kimber .300 Winchester Magnum, we picked the Barnes Tipped TSX in the 168 grain weight and loaded it with Reloader 22.

in that weight class of bullets (165 -180)i would run h4831sc less temp sensitive and not likely to have a compressed load,
that may cause the bullet to creep from the original setting depth which could jam the rifle up and not feed.
although not likely but why chance it.
