I remember when boltguns shot fair to good and once in awhile you got a screamer.

These days screamers are more common than bad ones when good smiths do their work.

Sunday I went to range with some friends and had the following rifles, all 308 on deck

TacOps
Gap
Score High
Surgeon
AI

Everyone of those rifles put one round in the same hole time and time again.

We are living in good times for precision shooters.

Re: We are Lucky

Definitely true words there, but I also give a lot of credit to the ammo manufacturers.

I used to be real damn happy with <1moa on my M40A1 and 173gr ammo, and how 175gr SMKs changed the whole game to the point were it was the exception to get dropped from Sniper School for marksmanship instead of the norm.

Good times for all except the enemy....

Re: We are Lucky

It is interesting how it changes your expectations. I have a basic 5R in 308 and I get kinda aggravated when I get one that makes a group goes .75" at 100 yds....

Plus now I know for sure it is not the rifle/ammo.. LOL

Re: We are Lucky

so true we are very lucky. The internet has helped a ton as well. So many people talking and willing to help when it comes to load development and teaching the process. So the information available today on forums such as this one...is so much more helpful than any reloading manual.

LOL...I would know nothing about that...or would I?

Re: We are Lucky

AMEN, MIKE!!!

I was thinking the same thing to myself a few weeks ago at the range. GAP, AI, APA...not to mention some high-end gas guns...along with all the quality ammo/reloads we could shoot and steel we could bang on with them. God I love this country!

Re: We are Lucky

I gotta mention that this site has also added to my fun factor in more ways than one. After many years away from precision shooting, I've rediscovered how fun it is to learn and apply marksmanship skills after reading thru some of the vast amount of knowledge available here. Two precision rifles, one custom 1911, a suppressor, a new range to shoot at and a few friends later, I can say life has improved greatly.
All has come about after seeing a pic of a Scout Sniper and searching to see what type of weapon he was deploying.
It was an M40A3 and the pic is in the SH forum. Several thousand $$ later, the fun goes on!!
I also have to mention TucsonDave. He was the switch that turned me back on to precision shooting after he invited my wife and I to go shooting at 3 Pts range in Tucson. He didn't know us from Adam either. I had PM'd him asking of local gun stores, and in his own style he said ( and I quote him rather loosely ) "To hell with a gun store, let's go shooting!"
We met 5 Hide members that day. And the rest as they say, is history.

Re: We are Lucky

Rifles and smithies and barrels all are MUCH better than my match days back in the 60's. However, I feel that the greatest improvement has been in the bullets. They are incomparably better than that era. Looking back...if I had a medium quality 1911 available now, and a stock Remington or Savage available now...and the bullets that are available now...I'd have hurt myself and been a lifetime Master, etc., considering the stuff we shot then.
