Weight tolerances for brass

Depends on purpose. If you're a benchrest shooter, you'll probably want to be +/- 1gr from the average weight.

For me: as long as it's all the same headstamp, that generally covers it. My 7mm RemMag brass was between 235 and 245 grains with 2 pieces at low 220's and one at 265+. Those 3 pieces got tossed in the trash because they were statistical outliers.

Was reading about a competition where the ammo is custom hand loaded and provided to the shooters. Their criteria for acceptable brass weight tolerance was +/- 2.0 grains, a four grain spread. That may sound like a lot but considering the density of brass compared to water commonly used to check case capacity it turns out to be a minute variation of volume. I purchased 500 pieces of Starline brass and separated the brass into groups of +/- 0.5 grains.

I bought Peterson 260 SRP brass and weigh it just to check and it was 1.5 which after loading Winchester to say that was an improvement is an understatement. I don’t worry about it as it will shoot 3/8 MOA. Like was stated above unless you shoot BR load and shop.
