I just picked up an older Remington 700 .308 in a partial trade for my jon boat.

Obviously I need to just go to the range and get used to it how it is, but what would you guys recommend for initial changes/tweaks/updates, etc.? Anything on this rifle I need to look for or anything like that?

Sorry for the total newb questions, but I guess thats what these forums are about.

thanks!

Re: Well I am in the game!!

you need to shoot it before you decide on making changes. It might be a shooter as is. But I can't stand a rifle with a bad trigger, so I always upgrade that first.

thanks, yeah i am most definitely shooting it first. Just looking for thoughts on what to check out on a used gun

Re: Well I am in the game!!

Make sure you have the best scope you can financially afford. Go and shoot a couple boxes of match grade ammo and see how you feel for the trigger and comfort of stock. I myself prefer the DBM for my rifles, so perhaps a new "tacti-cool" stock with a DBM is in order. Of course, the trigger is the key. Don't forget pictures.

Most stock Remingtons benefit from a trigger adjust by a competent smith. Next would be a bedding job, unless you plan to replace the stock, then bed the new stock.

Well I called Remington, it appears it is a 1969 BDL short action model. Hope it is a good platform to build on.

I need a taker for my Jon-Boat...does this rifle have a sporter style barrel. Post some pics, and you will probably get more detailed recomendations.
