Well I just got a note back from CS at Powder Vly. Inc. and they say NO Varget till July.
Just wonder if anyone has anything to say about WW-748 in a Remmy bolt .308 w/175smk's
Thanks for your time.
Respectfully,
LG

Re: What about WW-748 ?

DOH...

It is a ball powder so it is temp sensitive. Not a good thing.

Only powder you have?

Some proven 308 175 powders...

H4895
IMR 4895
RL 15
IMR 4064
H322

RL has changed the recipe a bit an not so temp sensitive.

I'm having great results with Win brass, RL 15 and CCI BR2 and wlrm primers.

Powder Valley has RL 15 in stock now

Re: What about WW-748 ?

Thx. Had some 748 sitting around is all. Don't remember why I even bought it. Getting kinda low on Varget and 4064 meters like toothpicks and not much left of it either.
FWIW; My Hateca built Remmy not happy with IMR-4895 & 175smk's. BUT, it's GTG w/168smk and 41.5grs. of IMR-4895, go figure.........
Varget has always been best for my .308 no matter what bullet I use.

Stock tube?.
Or, custom?.
I would start at 41.5/42.0/42.5..................2600-2626-2654fps, respectively, 26" tube.
748 is an exceptionally accurate powder........but, is temp sensitive.........like MOST ball powders.

Re: What about WW-748 ?

Two Shoes, it's a Hateca build with Shilen 1/10 #7 and it's a laser........
The "nut" behind the "pedal", not so much.....LOL
You say 748 is "temp. sensitve". In what way, group size, vel. or both?
I will be loading into FGMM brass(Yes, I have a "source" :) w/175smk's
will shoot to a 1K when I can.
Gratefull for any intel!
THX.

Re: What about WW-748 ?

When Hodgdon first came out with its "Extreme" powders, they published a chart showing .308 loads with 168-gr bullets. Varget, of course, was almost zero in temp/velocity change. I don't remember the range, either...30-90F or something?

Anyway, IMR 4064 was halfway between the 748 swings and Varget's. Can't remember if 4895 was in there, but there was one with less than 4064 but it was too slow for my gas gun.

My group sizes were always great with 43.0 748 and the 168s, for a gas gun. Iron sights, a bit less than 1 MOA at 200 benched. Thrown charges loaded on a Dillon, too.

I tried some weighed charges of 748 last week (same load) and the group sizes were 40% bigger. It *may* be a volume-sensitive rather than weight-sensitive powder.

Re: What about WW-748 ?

Hodgdon lists a limited number of loads for W748 and the .308, and for bullets above 155gr, you might do better with W760. W760 and H414 are literally the same powder with different labels in the what is essentially the same jug, marketed by the same company, Hodgdon.

IMR-4895, H-4895, and IMR-4064 are good alternatives for Varget in the .308, Hodgdon owns W-W and IMR, and they list loads for all of these powders in the same charts.

Re: What about WW-748 ?

I believe that BLC-2 is the same as 748.

Lump,
Federal brass is garbage. I have thousands of once fired, box stuff. Some of the case heads show pressure signs with the factory load. Pressures were fine by way of chrono. Brass is soft.
