what barrel contour

I am debating building another gun, and trying to figure out what barrel contour to get. I will target shoot it some, nothing serious maybe some matches for fun, and it will double as a hunting gun. I am not oafraid of carrying a heavier gun hunting but dont want a cannon. I guess what I am getting at is will the remington varmint be ok or is they a better contour between it and the m40

Rem var is a nice contour that provides plenty of metal for stiffness and to absorb heat, while not being painfully heavy.

I would absolutely not use an m40.

#5 or light palma will both shave even more weight than remvar or medium palma, yet still heavy enough to be "target" barrels.
