I have been thinking about one for a long time and now finally am ready to get one, but I don't know much about them. Searching found a lot about the M14, but most are the SA ones, witch doesn't help me to much. I am not to convinced the chinese can make a Amreican rifle well and was hoping someone here had one and wanted to tell me about it.

Thanks guys

Re: What can you tell me about the M14

Some of the chinese M14's use a forged reciever, which is a good thing, but the bolts have been reported to be soft, leading to exess headspace. There are gunplumbers making the conversions to USGI or SA bolts. This ain't a drop in deal, it takes some machine work.
Some of the chinese barrels are pretty good, but the flash hiders wont swap with USGI. The threads are differant.
SA has it hands down as far as warranty goes, and IMO they produce a better rifle than the chinese. The price reflects this, however.
For my money, I bought the SA. Had to work some quality control issues with them, and they ended up making it right.
Hope this helps a little bit, just keep researching till you get the info you need.

I've got two: One marked Poly Tech and the other marked Norinco. Essentially the same. I like them. They work. You will find a wide variety of opinions on them ranging from there just fine to 'that lousy Chinese crap will blow up in your face!'

You can check here for a lot of good info both pro and con.

Re: What can you tell me about the M14

The newer Chinese M14s apparently have fixed the soft bolt problems and will run as good as a USGI M14 with none of the issues that modern Springfields still have. However, all of us stateside will never know since they are no longer importable into the US.

You need to lurk here:

I owned an SA M1A long ago, but all that I own now are Poly Tech and Norinco M14s.
I have had Smith Enterprise, Inc. convert four of them into Crazy Horse M14s.
All Chinese M14s have forged receivers, chrome lined barrels and forged 1-piece op rods.
The Chinese receiver is closer to USGI than all others except SEIs receiver.

This thread has some valuable information:

Fulton Armory wasted a ton of excellent Chinese parts and I don't fully agree with their view of ChiCom M14s.
The barrel does NOT need be replaced to allow for a G.I. bolt to fit.
The trigger & sears, & hammers are NOT way too soft.
I have not read of or seen any catastrophic failure of a ChiCom M14.

I do want an ALL SEI M14 and will purchase one of their new receivers when I can

I was talking to honkey about the same thing the other night.
Because he's in Canada bro, I dont remeber if he said it was too much work t get it inported or if it was illegal.

Re: What can you tell me about the M14

I have a Springfield M1A that I pick up in 85. before Springfield went to sh#t. If I was to had to do it all over again. I would go with a Smith Enterprise.

Those three are currently bone stock, I plan on sending two of them to SEI for USGI bolt conversions and
I'll be adding UltiMAK M8 railed hand guards to their original standard profile chrome lined barrels.

I will also install Tubbs chrome silicon op rod springs and SEI's Vortex flash hider that uses a castle nut.
The Chu wood stocks are fine, but I may put the actions into USGI synthetic stocks.
This move will require the installation of a longer USGI/SEI op rod connector lock pin or the "Popsicle stick" mod.

Re: What can you tell me about the M14

I owned an M1A standard and a loaded both SA. Accurate rifles. I was looking to keep only one type of ammo around so I chose the M1A to go with my Savage. It was really meant to be semi-auto backup to the Savage. Well I just sold the loaded. I got rid of the standard a year or so ago. They are a pain in the ass to clean and didn't give me any more maneuverability or weight advantage over the savage. As I have said before I should have gone DPMS or Armalite in 308. My 2C's
