I have done a lot of reading and had decided to go with the Hornady 178 match bullet. But I just checked the bc on the 208 amax and it is stupid high. Even when compairing it to the 208 match, the 208 amax has the highest bc of them all. I'm shooting it out of a 20 inch 5R barrel (308 rem 700 ss5r) and hope to get 2700 fps. Is this a pipe dream with the 208 and heavier bullets? I'm going to call Hornady tomorrow and get the low down on what they think. I'm looking to reload and have a bullet perform well out to 1100 yds. Any thoughts?

With a 20 inch barrel its going to be pretty tough to get 2700fps. Check out
this thread and you will learn alot about .308 and 208 A-max's.

I called Hornady today and I will stick with the 178 match. They did suggest getting custom reloading dies. They are asking $150 for the set. Any thoughts on this?

As for the muzzle velocity, I shoot suppressed and factory Federal 175grn gold match is flying at 2645fps. Do you think 2700 with 178grn will be the bridge to far?

I'd use the 178bthp or 178amax. I have some of the 208bthp but they are going in my 300win mag.

Also I'd think about 2600fps will be your max with a ~175 bullet and handloads.

That's really good out of a 20. Maybe the suppressor is giving you a little extra gas or your chrono is a bit off?

FGMM175 chronos out of my 18" at around 2450 and out of a buddy's 5R 24" around 2600.

The suppressor does help. i'm going to check my book and see what my federal 168 are flying at too. I was looking for a good powder to use. I was leaning toward varget, but I'm going to call hodgdon tomorrow to inquire about their products. I want something temp stable. LEVERevolution looks like a good choice. There are so many choices.....

Hi, I checked my book and I misspoke. My mv is 2622 fps with Federal 175 gold match not 2645. Not a big difference.

Re: What Hornady bullet 178, 208 a-max or match? (308)

I load the 208s in my 300wm. I've seen claims of getting the 308 to shoot them but, I HIGHLY doubt you'd EVER approach 2700fps when a 300wm can't get them over 2950-3000fps with 76gr of Retumbo or H1000.

Even so, I think it would be worth seeing how fast you can get them up to if your barrel will spin them fast enough. with all the added BC, you may find that the 208 will outperform anything else on the long range.

I've never done that with a 308 but, I'd suspect that case capacity would be an issue with trying to cram enough slow burning powder in there to get any velocity out of it.

I'm not even sure how you'd get 2700+ out of the 178 and a 20" barrel but, I'm not loading for a bolt rifle in 308 so, I won't speak to any of this officially.

I called Hodgdon today but their offices were closed all day. I hope to get to speak with someone on Monday. I don't want shoot to hot of a load, but even 2650fps would not to bad. My goal is 2700fps, we shall see..... I still don't know if I'm better off with a custom die or a comp die. To many choices and ways to go.
