I got my first firearm about 2 months ago. Its a R700 Varmint riffle to which I added a Vortex Viper 6.5-20 x 50 scope. It shoots sooo nice! I am mainly interrested in long range target shooting. I've been working my way up to shooting accurately at longer ranges, but so far I'm shooting 400 yards or less. I am using Federal Premium 308win Sierra Matchking ammo. It seems to be very good and consistent, but looking at the trajectory charts, it quickly drops out at 500 yards. I heard that my riffle is accurate enough to do long range shooting but the ammo charts seem to say that after 500-600 yards the bullet runs out of juice. Am Imisreading it and if not, what is a recommended ammo for target shooting in the 700-1000 yard range???

If you aren't interested in reloading (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) and you are looking for something that a local gunstore MIGHT have in stock then 175 Black Hills shoots very well too. Given that your 700 is a varmint and has a slower twist, see if you can find any factory 155gr Lapua ammo. It certainly isn't cheap, but it has consistantly shot great at long range in a number of my buddies 700Vs and If you eventually decide to reload (once again HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) then you have GREAT brass to start with.

Either of those two ammo will get you to 1K easily. The burden is on the shooter to do his/her part. My friend was using 175 FGMM and has shot out to 1K consistently. They are running about 2600 fps give and take depending on the barrel length and such. But you don't need that much to get to 1K even with only 2600 fps (42 MOA is needed.)

I have a 22" 1:12 twist barrel and have gotten the best results at 700 yards and under with the old standby 168gr Federal Gold Medal Match. Georgia Arms 168gr HPBT is very close second in accuracy and low avg velocity spread, and it is relatively inexpensive if you can deal with long lead times and shipping screw ups. But everyone says past 600 yards the 175gr HPBT is best, so I'm going to try some HSM and FGMM in that weight to try at 700 and over, even though I think I have reached my rifle's range/accuracy limit.

Ihe .308 won't really carry enough energy at those long ranges for a clean kill, imho. Like many of the Fudds ... I stick to the 1000ft/lbs minimum rule.
Of course, I once squirrel hunted with an M70 .300 Win Mag, so I'm kinda weird anyway.

The AMAX is the most accurate hunting bullet Ive tested. But as others have said, you should handload when it comes to reaching out there. Good competition FL bushing die and a Wilson seater is the best way I believe. A well placed shot matters the most!
