How is this determined? Is this measurement taken from the height of the rings themselves? Or is it a measusement taken from the center of the bore to the center of the tube? Or is it configured a different way?

Thanks for your patience

Re: What Is Sight Height?

Center of bore to center of tube.

Not a measurement to be fudged as if it is off, it can have a somewhat drastic effect on your calculations.

Re: What Is Sight Height?

Center of bore to center of scope tube. Here's a couple of pics how I figure it and it's been right on this way.

Re: What Is Sight Height?

Nice pics Rob. I wish we could have placed this in the "Make a Sticky: Ring Height Info" Post. Question on the pics...I was always told to measure from the center of the blow hole to the center of the optic. Is this not correct? I noticed you measured just below the blow hole on the barrel.

Re: What Is Sight Height?

The "blow hole" is a little above center. It's used as a basic landmark for the measurement but the top of the stock is actually closer to center or just use the bottom of the hole and that should be close enough also. As long as you are with in about .25" or less you should be fine getting accurate calculations but the closer to right on the better.

Re: What Is Sight Height?

+1 for Rob01's method. If you want to have some fun, play around with the sight height on your ballistics program, while leaving all other variables the same!!

I was just doing that... It's amazing how that can be such a large factor if not measured correctly.

???? With a 100 yds baseline zero, and a sight height error of 0.2" (larger than anybody would err while measuring), when you dial your come ups to 1000 yds there is only a 1.8" POI error, or 0.17 MOA. Not large IMO

Re: What Is Sight Height?

That's 0.5 MOA at 1000 yds (...don't know if it qualifies as a HELLUVA), but I said an error of 0.2" is likely larger than anybody would err while measuring, and it is only 0.17 MOA at 1000.

So, as long as you measure it (even if it ia a rough measurement), don't worry too much
