What is your dream spotting scope? Why?

Ok, this thread is more a proof of concept for me so I will explain my thinking. First, I know nothing. Really a noob. I own one precision rifle. I did buy up (for my skill level) and it seems to be paying dividends.

I currently run a 3-12x50 S&B MIL/MIL scope. I am in the need for a spotting scope and binos. I think I would probably be best served by a spotting scope since I don't really hunt.

My thinking is I would want a spotting scope with a MIL reticle. One, I am still trying to master MILs. And I am determined to be as comfortable in them as a fish in water. Two, it would match my rifle, or anyone else's rifle who is also using MILS. Three, it would give me something I could practice ranging in MILS without attracting attention of waving a rifle around.

I only have access daily to a 600 yard range, and have NEVER shot beyond 400 yet. But 1000 yard ranges are not too far away, and who knows what the future holds? But I have been very happy with my "buying once" theory.

I have an understanding of what is hi-end and why in rifle scopes. But I have not even the slightest clue with spotting scopes or even the features that are possible with them. I don't even understand angled vs straight advantages. I also notice in spotting scopes more brand names show up than in just rifle scopes (i.e. KOWA)

So...let me start at the top in my search. For the professionals, enthusiasts and competitive shooters, what are the dream spotters and why?

Re: What is your dream spotting scope? Why?

US optics, Leopold, kowa, Hendsoldt all make great spotting scopes. Kowa are really nice but do not have a mil reticle.
An angle lense allow a shooter to see bullet impact or spotting disks in their target without comming out of position. Kowa scopes are really nice but do not have the mil reticle option.

Re: What is your dream spotting scope? Why?

I finally found a good deal on a Leupold Mark 4 spotter and am very happy. Went with the TMR reticle.

The Zeiss seems to be the best option out there, but at 3-5X the price of the Mark 4 I couldn't justify the dollars.

Re: What is your dream spotting scope? Why?

If we are talking about dream spotting scopes, I dont know why we are discussing anything other than the Hensoldt Spotter 60.

Re: What is your dream spotting scope? Why?

Spotter 60 is awesome, good thing I'm broke or I might try to buy one!
In the meantime, I'm happy with my MK4 12-40X60 P4 reticle 65145 spot. And useable with the Clip On OSTI UNS.
Love to try the Spotter 60 with my PVS-22, but a 27 would be more what you would want, and only what, 15K for the pair!

Has anyone tried a MK 4 20-60X80 110825/6 spot?

Re: What is your dream spotting scope? Why?

to be honest, the spotter 60 is too large and too much magnification for me (which is odd, since i'm a total mag whore on rifle scopes), and i'm having trouble warming up to the L-shaped reticle

the 12-40x leupold with TMR is enough and much more compact. doesn't take up too much space in my phantom

the downside to the leupold spotter is the glass fisheyes really bad. i don't really understand why. i have scopes with larger objectives (e.g. kowa has 80mm) and more magnification (e.g. NF benchrest at 42x) and neither has any distortion to speak of.

i just sold my kowa 821m. you can't get a better spotter for CMP/NRA High Power, but it would be a very poor choice for tac matches.

Re: What is your dream spotting scope? Why?

The good news is quality optics tend to be a good investment - they last a long time and have good resale value. All the more reason to "buy once, cry once." My only gripe with the Spotter 60 is the reticle. The mod that the FinnAccuracy folks got for it is more along the lines of what I'd want.

Sorry, I can't help with the spotter. I'm looking for one myself.
But if you're needing GOOD binos, there's some Swaro SLC 10x42's here on the classifieds right now for a great price.

I don't know or have any connection to the seller.

Just googled that. So it does come with a MILDOT should the user desire? It seems like a nice scope, and the price didn't seem bad at all. Is there an HD with a MILDOT?

And honestly I have a question? What is HD on a scope?

I'll go and check them out as well. Thanks for the heads-up.

My dream , would be a Spotter60 with a better , hashmarked reticle , with full mils & 1/2 mils , and numbered , something like the optolyth reticle .

Yeah baby! Add a 45-degree angle model with a 360-degree rotating barrel, a rotating reticle in the Eyepiece (a la Optolyth) so the reticle can be "squared" regardless of the orientatation of the scope, and a price tag under $3,000.00 U.S.
