My dad has a box of all sorts of strange looking ammunition from his great uncle who was a career Army man who fought in the first world war. I dont know much about him, but my dad had some of the stuff out last weekend going through it and this was in there. I was gonna see if any of you guys knew what it was. The round measures approximately 26 mm in diameter and the whole cartridge is 5.5 inches long. It has no primer and it appears to have two crimps put into the side of the case just above the rim. Any ideas?

I may be very very wrong but I believe that at that point there were lots of artillery rounds that were rim fires. Like I said, I may be very wrong on that though. Some reason that's sticking out in my mind from my great grandfather though.

Yes I should have mentioned that. Its a bit more than 1/8 inch but less than a half inch for sure. It doesn't take much effort to remove and replace the slug. It almost feels as if it was crimped. You may be right about it not belonging to the case though. My guess is the indentations indicate it is a spent round but i'm not sure. Its at my dads house or I would measure it.

I believe what you have is a 1inch round, a number of these were made, many with the crimp that appear in your photo, numerous headstamps for this round, some were rim-fire some were center fire.
