On the cheap?
Under a hundred bucks?
4-14 Simmons.
Goes from .22 squirrel gun, to ar, to turkey shoot, or hunting gun.

Not gonna cry if it gets F'd up.
Grab another one and easy to replace.

Don't pass on a 6-18 tasco at a show.

Niether are top end scopes, but you already know what those are.

Ya asked for cheap and decent.

(Maser, don't argue)

Have .204 & .223 bull-barreled ARs, both have 6.5-20 Leupolds. Not sure I'd call them cheap scopes, but you could probably find a good used one for around 500 bucks. Guess it depends on the size of your budget.

I have some older tasco world class plus scopes on my .223 and .243 that were inexpensive and so far holding up great. I have had them for around 8 years. I don't think they are made anymore but if you happen across one at a gunshow cheap I would not pass it up. You will however taks alot of crap from your buddys about it though. I still have a 20x supersniper on one of my 50cals. Although the glass is a bit dark compared to better optics at that power it is great for daytime shooting and for the price it has been fantastic. I bought it 2 weeks before a funshoot just so I could bring along the gun to try it out. I figured as soon as I could afford another NF I would swap it out. To my suprise it has been on there for around 4 years and is still going strong. I have no reason to change it so I will leave it untill I do.
I have not bought any lower end scopes in the past few years so I have no hands on with the newer popular low end scopes but, I do see alot of posts about people getting one and saying how great it is. Then, a few months later selling it to upgrade to something better. I have not read too much about why they needed to upgrade. I personally suscribe to the don't mess with it if it works theory so, it makes me wonder if the upgrade is merely for better glass or if poor tracking is the reason.

I have used everything from SN-3s to Nikon Buckmasters for varmint rifles, hands down the best for that aplication was an IOR 6-24x50 with an MP-8 reticle. Perfect zoom range and perfect reticle (for pdogs).

Budget minded, I completely agree with the recomendations for the Vortex.
