What other then a hot load would cause this?

Was going to insert a “hot load” joke but I’ll refrain. But my guess would be a loose primer pocket and over pressure. Do you reload? More details are needed.

Ar10 308 18"barrel, mega melonite 5x51 one, headspace was checked at install, before today less then 60 rds through the rifle, cleaned after last use, so far only fed m80 ball before this.

This was hornady Superformance sst 150gr factory ammo.

Was about 80 degrees and 70% humidity, rifle had shot about 20 rods of m80 ball before the hornady.

All all ammo came from house, temp 70 humidity about 50% fresh from box no dirt moisture ect.

I'm not saying it wasn't a hot load just wanting to eliminate all other possibilities.

Any other info needed?

When he mentioned headspace I think he was meaning the case was headspaced too short. I've had factory Hornady 308 soft point that showed severe pressure signs.

I wrote Hornady an email and they asked for the remaining cartridges back and provided a shipping label. They reimbursed my ammo with a new lot.

Hornady Superformance tends to run hot and pressures tend to stay higher for longer. There is probably significantly more pressure than M80 in the bore/chamber when the bolt unlocks.

Essentially, if you have to run that ammo try reducing gas at the block.

I thought Superformance was kinda "not recommended" for gas guns. I've shot it in bolt guns - not the 155 - but it was a pretty hot round.

Bottom line is, that specific factory load is to hot for your AR.

Or more explicitly, the powder , and the charge weight used doesn't play well with your gas system length. ( Port Pressures matter )

Its one thing to have ejector smear... but a popped primer is another thing all together.

Did the primer fall out of the fired , ejected case, or did it fall into and gum up your AR's action / trigger.

Does your 308 AR have an adj GB on it ?

What buffer weight and recoil setup ?

The extraction cycle was occurring while chamber pressures were higher then "normal"... and on that note how does the case rim look ?

And the weakest link gave way... the primer... and primer pocket is probably pretty loose now.

See if you can easily push the spent primer back in... with just thumb pressure.

Hornady running the ragged edge in pressure I see. Ditch the superformance. I’m not trusting much they put out these days. Their regular 308 Whitetail ammo was a bit warm and they must crimp the primers because I couldn’t get a primer to start after resizing. I should dig them back out and check them out. Lord knows I’ve got the time these days.

flat primer...cratered primer...ejector mark...primer out....and I thought I knew a thing or 2 about hot loads
hehehe

Don't make the assumption just because its factory ammo it cant be a hot load. Switch ammo. Be happy.

Yes adjustable gas block, I dont remember buffer weight, it was the standard that was recommended by a shoe that builds custom rifles...

That smear is where the case was driven into the ejection port front edge by the bolt, primer was found in my mag, yes it slid smoothly back into the pocked with almost no force.
