Hello all. I am really confused about scope bases and rings right now. Currently my project is taking my hunting rifle a remington 700 sps dm chambered in .308 ( this is the sporter model not the tactical nor varmint)and turning it into something better. I have purchased an m24 contour barrel from rock creek barrels and a hs precision stock pst-062, and sending the gun to my gun smith to do all the action work and barrel install. I am still undecided on a scope base. Do I need a 20 moa or a standard 0 moa base. I am thinking of buying a bushnell elite 3200 10x scope, and I think the absolute farthest I will shoot is 800 meters. Currently all I am shooting is 300 hundred right now. I sure appreciate the help everyone.

Re: What scope base do I need?

Cant go wrong with a 20moa, I see no reason to ever use a 0moa base if theres ever a chance of reaching out there. Only time youd ever be in a bad situation with a 20moa is if for some weird reason you arent able to zero the scope due to misalignment or a crappy scope.

If youre looking for a nice budget base, take a look at Weavers new canted picatinny bases, just put one on a 700 and theyre damn nice. EGW makes nice stuff too.

The way I look at it the base' sole job is to hold the rings onto the action solid, you dont need to spend $200 to do that. Only time Id ever buy an expensive base is if I need to get a Farrel for 30 or 40moa savage.

Thanks I was just thrown off when someone in the hide said something about having trouble zeroing there rifle at 100 yards because of the 20 moa base so that derailed me a little bit.

Re: What scope base do I need?

Actually believe it or not you can go wrong with a 20moa if your scope doesnt have much internal elevation.

If the furthest you will ever go is 800, a standard base should do you fine.

My mate has a 700 VSSF .308 with a 20MOA base on a Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 FFP, and the closest zero he can get is 300 yards.

He is going to have to purchase either a standard base or a 10MOA if he can find one.

Re: What scope base do I need?

The Elite 10x models have roughly 80MOA of internal adjustment, so from mechanical zero, you would have approx. 40MOA of adjustment which is MORE than enough to get you to 800yds with a 0MOA base.

HOWEVER, if it were me, I would opt for the 20MOA for your rifle as you will be able to reach out well beyond 800yds if ever the opportunity presents itself, AND you will keep the scope more in the center of its adjustment range when dialing in for extended distances. You should also be able to achieve a 100yd zero without any difficulties.

Re: What scope base do I need?

That settles it then. Hey I heard that the m24 sniper weapon system is going to go to two piece mounts instead of one piece. Have you guys heard anything like this?
