I am looking to buy a action wrench for a rem 700/ stiller predator action. I am needing one for a switch barrel. It would be nice if it were strong enough to take factory barrels off as well. what style do i need. The one that goes into the back of the action or a wrap around style? I have a back entry for my Lawton actions and it seems to work real well. What do you fellas think? Thanks as always Lee

Re: what style action wrench?

For match rifles that don't need a lot of torque I prefer the port entry style wrench. But for the uses you mentioned I think a rear entry wrench would do the best for you. You can also get those in a design that will accomodate a torque wrench. I don't know the brand name, but they have a 1/2" square drive socket.

Good luck.

The port entry action wrench is probably your sfest bet. I have the one made by surgeon, you'l get it from Brownells for, I think $47.

Skeet,
I have the wrap around ( Brownells ) and the rear entry ( PTG ) that supports the rails all the way down ( The thing is pretty stout, unlike some of the other rear entry ones on the market )

I have used the PTG primarily for torquing new barrels but have also used it for removing all but the most stubborn factory barrels...maybe 2-3 that I have had to use the wrap around for.

I have only used the the port style for the Surgeons and it seems to work great as well but then again, its only putting new ones on so far...

One other thing worth noting is that the wrap around tends to "mar" the finish on an action some. The PTG or the port entry makes the job a whole lot cleaner....

Just my humble 02 cents worth.

PS, I have a Brownells wrap around that you are welcome to use and try out if you want. Just pay shipping and try her out before you buy one. I would loan you the other one to try as well, but I am using it this next week, after that your welcome to borrow it and test drive it if you so choose....
