What to do with this old 700 LA?

I've got what I believe is a second year production 700 long action but I an unsure what it's worth honestly. I was thinking of sending it to LRI, I have had it for years and not done anything to with it.

I can't find any information on these but the action is slotted as well, it wears a 30-06 factory spotter barrel currently.

Any issues with reworking an action this old?

Older 700s are typically going to be of better quality than recent manufacture. Remington has has widely known QC issues here lately.

That action would serve as a fine base for a custom rifle. I would personally have not one qualm about using it. Good looking to boot as well.

As far as building it, I’m a fan of the 30-06. If money permitted I’d pick up a 24” 1-10” twisted Bartlien 3B/Light Palma, CG-Mod 22 2 stage trigger, MCS EH1/MCM A-10, topped off with a quality optic.

Make a dang fine longer range hunting rifle.

I was thinking a BDL bottom metal hunting rifle. I could stick with 30-06 and load them long in this or 280AI. I have also contemplated chambering it for 25-06 with the 131gr blackjacks.

Yeah BDL all the way, I’d look at the Wyatt extended box. It will give you a bit more room in the internal box for longer loads. With a 30-06, I’d look around the 200 grain weight, such as a 208 ELDM or a 198 WTC Flatline (the WTC will need either a
1-9” twist or a gain twist like a 1-8.5” - 1-10”).

Should be able to get a year vintage from the barrel proof marks.

I'm a sucker for the .257. I've got a 69 (so far as I can tell by the proof marks) 25-06 ADL. It's been a good gun, and 115 partitions have killed everything I've needed it for including elk.

Depends on the usage, but a 25-06 or 30-06 get the job done just fine. They may not be the hot new thing but they'll get it done.

Thanks for the responses, I verified it was made May 1963. I'm going to use a Proof barrel and send it off to LRI. I am debating a BDL set up or sticking with an ADL to save some weight. Still unsure of what I will chamber it in. 30-06 is a safe bet but .270 and 25-06 could work too.

I have and old (1971 )Rem 700 chambered in 30.06. I had it re-chambered to 6.5x55 Swede with a Bartlien 1/8 twist barrel. It's awesome and now my favorite rifle. Softer shooting and more accurate than the old 30.06 IMHO.
