Sidearms & Scatterguns what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

Depends on what you plan to do with it, but if you are going to shoot the action games a mag funnel is a good place to start. I like the Techwell mag wells as they are easy to put on and take off again if you don't want it on the gun. Other than that try the gun out and see what you think you need. In reality people tend to spend lots of $ to hang stuff they really didn't need on theri gun in the first place

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

I think the only thing lacking is checkering or skateboard tape on the front of the grip.

Magwell funnel might be nice. I'd pass on the full length guide rod.

why would you pass on the guiderod

this is a new to me gun and the first 1911 gun i have ever owned

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

I'd pass on the guide rod too. A 1911 was designed to run without out one. People who say they stop the recoil spring from getting kinked haven't looked at how a 1911 works or they're trying to bullshit you so they can sell parts. The barrel and frame dust cover keep the spring from getting kinked. The only thing a guide rod does is make the gun more aggravating to take down.
Take the pistol out, shoot the hell out of it, then see what you "need" for it.

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

i shot it quite a bit today and the gun doesnt really NEED anything these are want items i just assumed the full length guide rod would be more desirable to prevent the fore mentioned spring kinking and it diddnt come with one because it is cheaper for the manufacturer to not include them but it sounds like it isnt necessary so i will pass on it

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

I have been carrying the 1911 off and on for 45 years for business and personal. Got issued my first 1911 in 1966.

I have my personal preferences for the parts I like depending on the guns mission.

The advice given earlier to shoot a couple thousand rounds through the gun first and then decide what you want to spend money on and add to your gun.

Personally for competition guns, I put a Smith&Alexander flat magazine well, I like Cylinder and slides smooth/rounded triggers available in long, medium and short. I like the longer tactical Ed Brown magazine release. I like the Ed Brown Ambi wide thumb safety, and which ever sights you like. For Comp guns I now run fiber optics, mostly Dawson. For rear sights I like Warren Tactical.

For fighting guns, I use only single sided thumb safety (When CCW/EDC use I prefer not to have the safety accidental hit and turning the gun 'on'). Lately I really like the New STI part. I don't use a magwell for a carry gun. For a service gun I will still use the Ambi Ed Brown tactical safety, the skinny ones. I will still use a Smith&Alexander magwell on a service gun, but not a carry gun. I don't want the extra weight or length for concealment.

Sights are usually either Trijicon or Mepro night sights. With that said, my latest Carry piece has Novaks brass dot. I really am liking that with their new wide notch rear low rider. Running that on the custom LtWgt Commander that I carry these days for most of my CCW/EDC.

A lot of years and dollars coming to those conclusions. Nothing better than anyone else's, just my way for me and my experiences of carrying and fighting with the 1911.

Good luck.

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

Chiftian thats the greatest no BS assessment of a 1911 ive ever heard. that said ill take heine straight eights and the smith and alexander mag well and some better magazines (Tripp cobras or Wilson)

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

Adding to what Chieftain said above,

My personal favorite mag well is the Heinie, but it requires machining of the frame. If that's not ok for you, there's plenty of other options in the bolt on category.

The line between competition gun and carry gun tends to be blurry in my world because the gun usually gets used for both.

If it's going to be a regular carry gun, be aware that ambi safeties can break. The new design Kimber unit (the one that is on a great many of the series 2 guns) has shown some promise, but isn't bombproof either. Wilson's new Bulletproof looks to be the most promising but I haven't had a chance to use one yet.

Ahhh the full length guide debate. My personal experience says that recoil springs last longer with them, but I don't like them in carry guns for 2 reasons 1)Unnecessary as has been proven by history 2) I like the option of pushing the lower side of the muzzle against something to chamber a round if I'm having the run the gun one handed. The only real reason I can see for them is to increase the weight of the gun in competition, and thusly help keep the muzzle down.

Because someone mentioned them, Where night sights are concerned, I don't use them. My feeling is: If you don't have enough light to see the sights, do you have enough light to identify your target?

Further, when doing close in work, there is a tendency to try to align the dots when the target is close enough to do the job with a flash sight picture.

Now the griptape on the front strap thought, mentioned above, has merit. I've done that in the past and I almost prefer it to checkering.

I've seen this and watch shooters try to align their dot on tartgets I was able to index on in near complete darkness. Second problem is muzzle flash, after a one or more, and depending on brighness, it can take awhile to find the dots again.

Yeah, I forgot to point that out as well. Thanks for bringing it up. Sounds like your experience, with night sights, mirrors mine.

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

soo i decided to try out the magwell so i ordered a wilson combat from brownells got it yesterday and tried to install it the mainspring housing needed a ton of filing and when i finally did get it installed i come to find out the funnel itself isnt straight and i cant even get a mag to go in

Yes, only one.

Put a "<span style="font-style: italic">For Sale</span>" tag on it.

Then when (if ?

Unergonomic. Unconcealable. Ugly as sin. Hmmm, did I miss anything? lol

Seriously though, the 21 is great for those few that actually have hands big enough to manipulate it. For those of us with smaller hands, there isn't much hope in double column land..... Oh wait, yes there is. It's called an XD.

Well, for you teeny-tiny fellas with dwarf hands,

you can still get the G21 and then have the grip reduced and tailored to fit:

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

I just picked up a Springfield RO, and this thread has the best advice. I had a list of things to upgrade, and now it is down to one or two parts until I can shoot the hell out of it and become familier with the platform.

Good to hear! How's it working and how do your targets look?

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

I did a couple things to make mine more of a carry gun...

Harrison Extreme Service fixed rear sight
Dawson Precision Trijicon front sight
Larry Davidson G10 Wyrm grips

It went through a Duty 1911 course a while back and performed very, very well.

Ditched the rear adjustable already?

HOLY CRAP! On another note, I just looked at Davidson's site. I now, finally, know who made a pair of G10s I've had for years. Guy I got them from had no idea who made them.

Re: what upgrades for a S/A range officer ?

put full length guide rod in mine for reasons i believe(extra front weight) while minimal its there. smith and alexander mainspring housing with mag well dawson precision front fiber optic site vz operator grips and skateboard tape on the frontstrap
