Went shooting with my bolt action 308 today and after the first shot when trying to cycle the action the bolt would not cooperate. I had to muscle the bolt open. This had happened once before, again on the first shot of the day. After that, no problems firing a total of 40 rounds. Is this something to be concerned about?

Re: what would cause the following:

You need to provide more information:

-Make and Model of Rifle (and any custom work)
-Make and Type of Ammo (factory or reload- if reload, then details)
-When does this occur and when doesn't it occur

That's a start.

Re: what would cause the following:

Make: savage 10FLP
Ammo: german military surplus
has happened twice, same ammunition. Always on the first or second shot. The rifle is brand new. I've only shot it 5 or 6 times now.

Re: what would cause the following:

dude....call the fuckin german army and tell them you got some of their shitty ammo that don't meet spec and now gives you a rash........let us know what happens

What else do you want. Bolt answered your question. Short and sweet.

Was it hard to lift the handle, or just to pull it back? What did the brass look like?

Re: what would cause the following:

The rifle probably doesn't like the cases. Some rifles are finnicky on what they like. Mine hates lake city brass for some reason. If you have a reloading press, try setting the bullets a little deeper too, that might help.

Re: what would cause the following:

Hello everyone, thank you for your responses. I have used factory ammo from Federal & Hornady, they had not given me a problem. I've been buying this German Surplus because of the price. It's $85 for 200 rounds on cheaper than dirt. I only tried the factory ammo once because the price was so high. But I also shot better with it. I'm completely new to this and learning as I go. I was just worried that maybe the rifle could be damaged and knew the best place to get info was here.
From reading all the comments I'm going to try a couple different types next weekend. I was trying to save a few bucks and guess I got what I paid for. Thank you all again, much appreciated.

I wasn't being rude, I thought it was hilarious. But I disagree with you in that he gave me an answer to the problem. Damn shit did give me a rash.... now if he mentioned what type of cream would help..........
