what year did leupold go with the round mildot?
were all round mildots on etched glass instead of wire on leupolds ??

i was trained on the USMC football mils and the round mils are different, would rather have a football mildot leupold.

if they did, leupold was selling them already done. i bought one from a regular retailer in february of 2000 and it has the oval mildot reticle.

That's what I thought too.

Re: what year did leupold switch to the round mildot ?

Our M1A Ultras had round mil-dots that were supposedly done by Dick Thomas, but that was abck in 93.

Re: what year did leupold switch to the round mildot ?

Here's the answer on Leupold mil-dot reticles from Kent Gooch and Rick Bowcher back in 1998. I'm gonna paraphrase it for space and clarity -

"All military Mk4 M3A and the old M3A Ultra's have the etched glass round mildot reticles. All commercial Leupolds have the stamped wire (reticles) as they were made by Premier Reticle".
- Kent Gooch

"The military scopes all have the round laser (mildot) reticles. It is only you poor civies (purchasing Leupolds) who are stuck with the wire footballs, yuck!! Leupold made that decision because they did not want to be directly associated with the killing of humans (except ehen there is a huge military contract involved!)."
- Rick Bowcher

Here's the quote about mil-dot reticles directly from p.13 of Premier's 2000 printed catalog -

"PREMIER RETICLES manufactures three different styles of mil-dot reticles. All three are wire reticles. They are not made on glass and will always have dots that are oval shaped ..........
..... The traditional style with the broad posts at the edges of the reticle is called the standard 3/4 minute mil-dot. Our mil-dots are made to both ARMY and USMC standards. U.S. Army mil-dots have posts that are 45% narrower than the posts on USMC mil-dots."

So it appears that, at least up until the year 2000, all round mil-dot reticles that were found on Leupold MK4 and Ultra scopes were of the etched glass variety and came from Leupold, while all of the so-called "foolball" or USMC style mil-dot reticles encounterd in Leupold scopes were of the wire variety made by Premier Reticle.

I hope that this might help to answer some questions on the subject.

That would be Rick Boucher.

Well Lindy, I don't want to be a nit-picker and it's certainly too trivial to argue about, but I've always known him as Rick Bowcher. Google that name and see for yourself!

But since you brought it up, back when I used to correspond with him Rick's e-mail address was [email protected], in fact it probably still appears that way over at the SC Hot Tips forum.

In any case, Bowcher or Boucher, those who are aware of who Rick is know who I'm talking about

Here's a link to two articles he posted on SniperCountry.

I'm inclined to assume that he knows how to spell his name.

And the email address I have for him spells it Boucher.

I fully realize you are aware of who Rick is.

Lindy, you're a "right-fighter" and can't stand being corrected, even if it's in good humor! I wouldn't normally worry about it, but you first posted to correct me, and now you can't seem to accept the fact that you might have been wrong in doing so.

I posted on this thread with the idea of helping to answer a question about Leupold reticles and in doing that I quoted Rick Bowcher. You almost immediately posted to correct what you percieved to be my misspelling of Rick's last name.

If you're so "inclined to assume that he knows how to spell his last name" and feel the links that you posted are the last word on the subject, then have a look at these -

Rick's post is the second in this thread. Note his e-mail address, and it isn't spelled Boucher.

http://www.snipercountry.com/hottips/Trace_Vapor.htm
Again, check the second post in this thread.

http://www.snipercountry.com/hottips/ColdBoreShot.htm
You'll find Rick's post as the fourth of this thread.

http://www.snipercountry.com/hottips/Flinching.htm
Rick's post is the also the fourth on this thread.

http://www.snipercountry.com/hottips/Parallax.htm
This time it's the third post of the thread.

http://www.snipercountry.com/hottips/M24SWS.htm
Rick's post shows up as the fourth of this thread.

I could continue with these, but even you probably get the picture by now.

So we have two possibilities here. One - that Rick's last name is actually Boucher but he purposely misspelled it Bowcher on his e-mail address, or more likely, the person who entered his article on the website accidently misspelled it.

I Googled both "Rick Bowcher" and "Rick Boucher". Guess which spelling the SOTIC Instructor came up under? I invite you to do the same.

I initially said that this is too trivial to argue about, and that's true, but your smart-ass reply just pissed me off.

In any case, I'm done.

Re: what year did leupold switch to the round mildot ?

If you do a Google advanced search on "rick boucher" on snipercountry.com, you get 84 hits.

If you do the same search on "rick bowcher", you get 49 hits.

The third possibility is that Rick has changed the way he spells his name - because it's Boucher in an Earthlink email address which he sent to me.

And it may be true that I don't care to be corrected, but neither, it would appear from the length of your reply, do you.

Cheers!

Re: what year did leupold switch to the round mildot ?

Hey, maybe Rick Boucher has a brother named Rick Bowcher. I saw the same situation on the Bob Newhart Show ("This is my brother Darrel and my other brother Daryl.")

Possibility: Rick's name is spelled Boucher but he doesn't want it pronounced the French way, so he uses Bowcher to suggest the right way to say it. Peace, out!
