For years I have always run cheap scope rings on all of my rifles. I am now building my first precision rifle and I am wondering what the difference is between $140 scope rings, and $8 rings?

Is there really a difference? Is there something that I am missing with the better rings that I dont even know about because I have been cheap all these years. Is there really justification to spend the extra money?

Re: Whats the difference...

If you asked what is the difference between $60 and $120 rings it might be harder to say "Just get the nicer rings." I'm amazed anybody can make something with a hole in it for $4 and sell a pair for twice that and call them scope rings.

The good stuff will hold your scope securely, without marring it or misaligning it.

Re: Whats the difference...

What's the difference between a BMW and an Ox Cart?....they will both get you from point A to point B, won't they?

The quick answer to your question, (other than $132....I liked that) is that you are paying for precision tolerances, strength and quality designs.

If you're planning to build a "precision rifle", then that implies precision components. Cheap Chinese crap rings have no place in the same room with a quality precision rifle.

If, however, you are planning to build a "precision rifle" from the cheapest junk components you can find and mount a piece of crap Chinese scope, then go ahead and get the $8 rings. They will be well matched to the rest of your rig.

If you are building a quality rig, take a hard look at Seekins rings. They are absolutely top quality, yet they still manage to maintain "reasonable" pricing.

Re: Whats the difference...

There are some differences, tolerances, finish quality, and strength/materials. Worth the price? I wouldn't use $8 rings, but I don't plan on going over $100 either. Any CNCed ring should be so precise as to be irrelevent, especially lapped. Finish quality, is just a personal preference I prefer mine stay adhered, I don't mind light machining marks but I think Burris XTRs are the only ones I ever found some on. Strength is important one but really only if you shoot something with serious recoil, or have to use very tall rings like on an AR. To twist or hit a decent quality low or med ring hard enough to break it you'll probably destroy something else. Keep them properly torqued and most any will do the job. I get some peace of mind by taking a few steps up.

Re: Whats the difference...

I think there is an Andrew "DICE" Clay response in the subject line of this thread!

I didn't use "the expensive rings" until I was running a real rig. Simply put, it does make a difference, buy the best you can afford, no more!

Re: Whats the difference...

I tired accu rings before because they were the only rings I could find at the last minute local to were I live and they are pure garbage!!!!! You need to spend at least 50 bucks on a set of rings.
