I did some reading last night about the 2010 SHOT Show debut of the AX338 but I couldn't find anything more than press releases. Are they in customers' hands yet? What are the main improvements over the AW system?

Re: When is the AX338 coming out?

The main improvements i saw from talking to Dave Tooley @ International Sniper Comp in Ft Benning was that the AI AW was never designed to handle 338, but it managed. The AX was made solely to handle the 338LM. Pistol grip was a nice touch, but otherwise its similar in almost all aspects to the AWs with some cosmetic changes to meet PSR contract requirements

Re: When is the AX338 coming out?

I would like to give some information on AX338 and AW338.
The .338 version of the AW was designed as part of a collaboration with Lapua who designed the round. It was the AI/Lapua partnership which brought the .338 Lapua to the market in the mid 1990's. AI have sold over 3,000 AW338's so it is not exactly correct to say it was never designed to handle the .338. It was as a result of the AW338 that the .338 round entered the market when it did and was sold to various military customers for over 12 years. In 2008 the British forces were equipped with AW338's and earlier this year it was reported that an L115A3, which is an AW338 version, made the longest ever recorded kills in Afghanistan. Not bad for a weapon never designed to handle 338.
The PSR requirement and the demands of military users, primarily driven by night vision and other accessories, influenced the design of the AX338. At that time we took the opportunity to increase magazine size from 5 rounds to 10, added a pistol grip, increased the safety margins on the bolt and action, changed the butt spike, changed the way a magazine is loaded, changed the length of pull and some other aspects of the design.
It is a new product and not almost similar to the AW with a few cosmetic changes.
We are now in production and have already sold to military groups. The AX338 will be available in the USA during the first quarter of 2011 as will be the AX308. The AX AICS will follow in the second quarter.
Any other questions you should call AINA in Fredericksburg and they will be please to answer your questions.

Re: When is the AX338 coming out?

I was doing a little more reading on the AX system and I found on the AINA website that the guns have Bartlein barrels on them (http://www.accuracyinternational.us/ax-rifle-features-474/). The comment is made by Scott Siegmund in the comments at the bottom of the page. Is that correct? Has AI always used Bartlein barrels or is that a new addition?
