Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

I talked to Noveske and they said that 1/8 was about optimum for what you want it to do, if you plan on shooting subs and supers. 1/7 might help with the 240's, but what about the supers?

Satern, if you can get them to do it, can do whatever twist you want. But good luck on the wait and communication if they don't have one like you want in stock already.

Thanks to all who responded.

"...what about the supers?"

Good question. I don't have any reason to believe that they'll fly apart or lose accuracy with a 1:7, but I'm all ears if anyone has some data regarding this issue.

"Why would you want a 7 twist...."

The gun will be used mostly (~90%) for subsonic. Who knows what the future holds for available components, so I'd like to keep options open for the 240smk or whatever new bullets are offered in the future if it doesn't mean sacrificing much for supersonics. Also, can's are pricey and take a long time to get. I have exactly one and would like to be overkill on stability.

The reality of the matter is I'll shoot the cheapest sub load that I can make that works well. I'm just trying to keep my options open.

I'd love to go order a 1:8" barrel if it's truly the best solution, but I'll sniff out a 1:7" if it will fit my needs better. I'd really love to hear some more input on this matter!

Thanks again,
Bob

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

I have shot a bunch of blackout and the only reason I see 1/7 twist is to shoot some do the newer style expanding sub bullets. They are very long. Some say 7 and others say 8's work just fine too. I run 8 twist and if your looking for 8 we can get you a barrel.

The Most expensive part of your load will be the bullet. SMk and Amax is where I would look.

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

I only question wanting something other than the norm is that there was a lot of research done on the entire loading, from the brass, to bullet to twist. I would think that that original manufacturer would have looked into all things and picked the optimum for the biggest varience.

Thats the only reason I kinda question.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned a 7 twist o you in the beginning because of the 240's. Seems to me you ignored it till now.

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

I'd like a 1:7, also. I want to build a couple of 6.5 inch sub-only 300 SBR's with Mini7's on the ends. I've been holding out for match grade 1:7 stainless barrels.

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

"AAC is changing to 1/7 twist."

Ahhhh, so then there are barrels in existance somewhere, maybe in the hidden tunnels beneath AAC's R&D facility. Will they be available without the rest of the upper anytime soon?

rsilvers, I'm guessing that you've put a bit of thought into this change (I say that tongue-in-cheek, as it's certainly an understatement). Have you experienced any negative effects on the lighter bullets at supersonic speeds coming from the 1:7" twist? Is there any reason at all that I should put a 1:8" twist on this build rather than a 1:7" twist?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

AAC is already shipping some 1/7.

I did a 30 round group with each and calculated mean radius and radial standard deviation, and there was no difference in accuracy with 125 grain bullets.

1/7 and 1/8 is not different enough to expect to be able to see a difference in accuracy - and if you did, it would be due to the specific barrels and not the twist.

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

rsilvers,

Did you also test the 110 grain bullets? If so, was there a difference in accuracy with those when comparing 1:7" to 1:8" barrels?

I didn't see 1:7" barrels on the AAC website.

Thanks for taking the time to share your research,
Bob

Re: Where to find a 1:7 twist ar15 barrel in 300 Blk

I'd still like to know if anyone has data to support whether or not the faster twist (1:7" vs 1:8") causes a significant change in accuracy for the 110 grain bullets. In particular, I'm interested in a short barrel's response.

Also, are there pre-fitted AR-15 barrels in the 1:7" twist available to common folks?

Thanks,
Bob

[crickets chirping]

I'm still looking for some insight to,
