Thinking about finally getting a 1911, but am clueless as to which companies should be avoided or sought after.

Will be using this with and without a suppressor and plan to put an RMR on it from the get go. Also thinking a 5" barrel from the start, as it's just going to be a range toy and not a carry piece.

So, what should I be looking at? Would love a turn key set-up if possible, but can source a threaded barrel separately if needed.

Thanks

ETA: Call it $2,000-2,500 all in with the RMR ($450-500) and 10x10rd mags ($200-225???), so $1,800ish for the pistol with threaded barrel, pic rail, and RMR mount.

Mag costs just based off a quick Google search of MEC-GAR 10 rounders. Unsure if these are what I want/need, so welcome guidance on that front as well.

Been pondering pretty close to the same question!!!!!

I've been thinking about eventually upgrading my Kimber Eclipse Target II to something optic compatible, threaded, rail, etc. This gun gets carried hunting occasionally, shot at the range quite a bit, and carried in the truck/car console and very occasionally on my person. It is not an every day CCW or duty piece.

Would also like a good (or great) trigger, mod 70 guts, and barrel/springs set up for .45 Super (I've always figured I've got a .22 and a .38 for "soft" loads, so my .45 ACP loads are upper end), but I may be getting into a higher price point than I'm willing to spring for.

Oh, yeah, under barrel pic rail as well.

Basically, the guts of a 1911 with all the modern good shit as well, haha.

I guess something else to know would be which mags to get/avoid as I have to imagine there are plenty of crap producers out there.

Must be the weather. I get bit by the 1911 bug every few years, and this is one of them.

If you can identify your price point it'll help people help you.

Nice, $2k gets you into a pretty nice 1911!

There's a lot of knowledge on this forum, but you can also check out 1911addicts if you want to read 1911 stuff until your eyes bleed. I just rediscovered their site the other day, and my eyes hurt. It's also useful to check out their exchange just to see some ballpark figures.

You'll want to decide if you want a rail, if you want steel, caliber (blasphemy, I know, but these are modern times), etc.

Just for poops and giggles, here's a pretty one...

Thanks for the tip on the 1911 Forum.

Also wondering if a double stack would be more up my alley. I have large hands so that wouldn't be an issue, and the idea of higher mag capacity is never a bad one.

Gucci 1911 in single or double stack with all the stuff you say?

STI is nice. I do not own one, just handled and shot one once. Extremely nice shooting handgun. MIL/LE discount as well if that applies. This or a Dan Wesson Specialist would be my choice. Beautiful pistols.

Haha, have handled 9mm STIs at matches and while truly works of mechanical art, are probably not what I'll be going with. They start at the absolute top end of my range.

If I were in your shoes, I'd be looking for a used Nighthawk, Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, or Guncrafter that has the features you want. Prices are way down; you could find a great deal. For a new gun in your price range, Dan Wesson is your best option by a wide margin.

Stay away from Mec Gar mags. Wilson, Chip McCormick, and Colt GI mags are generally agreed to be the only totally trustworthy magazines available. I believe Wilson makes the best of all, and they're all we run in my house. Roughly 7000 rounds between my wife's Colt Combat Elite and my CQB with no malfunctions.

Thanks for the insight.

Same guidance for the mags for a double stack, or are those more rare and therefore just easier to get mags from the manufacturer?

“1911“ is a specific Colt pistol. It is so misused it means almost nothing/everything. ”Government Model” is actually a Colt pattern.

You all seem to be talking about .45 caliber pistols. What’s is described as being sought is more like:

Screen_Shot_2017-12-20_at_10.42.01_AM__03207.1513788148.400.380.png

FNX with RMR. 15+1 double stacked mags.

I’ve tried to like the FN. The grip just feels too big. Especially after years of shooting a single stack 1911 (sorry, don’t know what else to call it).
The DW looks pretty sweet. Anyone know if you can mount an RMR type optic on it? I can’t tell from the pics.

Man asks for a Kleenex. Wife hands him a box of Puffs wipes. Teenage son informs them that technically, Puffs aren't Kleenex because Kleenex is a trademarked brand and that's copyright infringement. Dad rolls eyes and thanks his wife for the kleenex.

Just giving you a hard time @Fig

Oh, I recognize the blasphemous road down which I'm trying to wander....but I think I'm going anyway :p

Already have tricked out Glocks, so now it's time for a tricked out "1911"

I don’t stress about it, but it’s no different than calling magazines “clips”, or a nautical chart a “map”.

“The beginning of wisdom is calling things by their proper names.” - Confucius

Nothing wrong with tricking out your pistols. They’re yours. Do what you want.

Just don’t be that guy who thinks he’s added value on the pimped out Government. Whatever you spend tricking it out is roughly how much you’ve devalued it.

Not so with an FNX that has a slide precut for an RMR.

Oh, there is certainly not a belief that I'm adding value I'd expect to recoup if I sell it. Just wanting to make it mine.

Serious question: if I'm not getting a Colt government model 1911, as noted in your photo above, what term should I use to refer to the model of pistol I seek, wherther made by Colt or any other manufacturer?

Dan Wesson discretion

my only question is commander or full 5 inch. In 9mm of course.

I watched a Video with Bill Wilson and he was saying the commander pistols have less recoil?!?

what have y’all found?

It’s correctly called a ”Government”, or “Government Model”, from Colt. The copies are also refereed to as Government Model, or Government Pattern. 1911 has become common usage, not saying it isn’t, but it’s still wrong. A 1911 is just the big order of Government Models during WWII.

It depends. The Colt Commander in the aluminum frame will have more felt recoil. The all steel Combat Commander has less.

I'm going full 5" (well, 5.5" w/ the threaded barrel) on mine as it's not being carried and the little guys seems to command a higher price.

With that list and budget, I would look for a deal on a STI or maybe Para Ordinance ( now Para USA)

Someone elsewhere sent a link for the STI H.O.S.T. which seems to check all the boxes right out of the gate.

Only problem is finding one...

M1911 or M1911A1 are US government model numbers. The Colt pictured above is a 1911A1.

As far as manufacturers go my experience is with Springfield Armory. Under $1000, RSO models are well equipped, but the only RMR is 10mm.

Thanks for the info ref Springfields

Buy your mags and add your dot.

I'm sure I'll bring on the hate as it's a Kimber.
My experience with Kimber has been nothing but positive. I purchased mine 10 years ago. My first firearm(I started late). In the first two years, I put over 6k thru it. Never an issue with any factory ammo except WWB. The pistol just ran and ran. I finally took it out of mothballs(it didn't stay my only firearm) and did a complete spring change and she has been running again with no hiccups.

If Springfield made a pistol with a threaded barrel I'd point you in that direction.

Just one guy's opinion.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a used Dan Wesson Discretion. threaded barrel, suppressor height sights, comes in 9mm, excellent quality. Have it cut for an RMR and slap her on and you are good to go.

I'm looking for .45, and the Discretion seems anything but discretely with the slide cuts and whatnot. A little too Liberace for my tastes, haha.

Was looking at the DW Wraith though...

I have enjoyed my FN-X and got one on initial release.

No malfunctions or regret.

If I were you, I'd look at Rock Island for your first step in this direction. Reasonable prices (inexpensive!) and you will get the experience you want and will have fun doing it and not spend a boatload of money.

For the money, Sig makes a hell of a railed 1911...

My son’s shoots better than many high(er) end pistols despite MIM parts from the factory... Buy one with a tight slide, lap it in, then put a couple hundred rounds through it before replacing most of the guts with Wilson Combat parts and you get this:

sorry, thought I had a better pic... LOL Next step is a drop-in Nighthawk trigger...

Speaking of Nighthawk, if your budget allows, their GA Precision w/a rail is sublime:
