Hi Guys ,

I am thinking of building a 7mmWSM UP , need advice on the type of action to use , was thinking of a Surgeon SA WSM model action .

Any one have any experience with running a WSM out of a Surgeon SA action ?

The short action is ok if your building a single shot. You need a long action if your planning on having a repeater just because you seat the Berger 180gr out so far.

i would run either a Surgeon Rsr, Stiller or Phoenix.

i havent seen any good deals lately on rem 700 wsm actions and there are alot of great custom actions in the $700-800 range. i would not cough up the extra cash for the true surgeon and would happy slum it and run the rsr.

I have had 3 7wsm's all on Short actions, i wouldnt build it anyother way. with my current one, i am running the 180's at 2.930 using aics mags, it works great after setting up the mags and notching the feed ramp of the action

i have a 7WSM on a stiller tac30 single shot. with a standard saami chamber and ammo loaded to jamb, they are much longer than anything you could run through a short action magazine. it doesnt bother me because i prefer a single shot most of the time. i do think a long action may be better for a repeater designed to shoot the heavies. .140 jump is quite a lot. i have always had best accuracy with a slight jamb or short jump.

I had a SA Surgeon repeater 7wsm built by GAP, you'll want to either have the mags modified or by the Accurate mags with the front plate to get the extra length. Then you'll need to have a tiny notch cut in the feed ramp so the bullets clear when coming up the mag.

It was a hell of a rifle, one of many that I never should have sold.

Jered (APA, PAI) is building my 7WSM on a Surgeon RSR WSM action. Ill be using the new (due out any time now) Seekins WSM DBM, and the WSM mags have a internal OAL of over 3.16"! which will give me plenty of room to seat the 180s out longer than a AICS mag.

So no need to goto a long action if you use the Seekins WSM DBM.

Re: Which action for a 7mm WSM build ?

it is all going to come down to how the chamber is spec'd. Gap has a 7wsm Repeater reamer and it works great for shooting 180's out of mags.

the chamber on my gap 7wsm with 180's i am touching lands at 2.965 so i am currently jumping .035. My other 7wsm was kissing right around 2.90 or 2.95 and shot tremdously with a slight jump.

All i know is that the gun flat out shoots and is a hammer, to me the benefits of a wsm is the ability to use a short action, the only way i would ever built a long action wsm if it was a single shot set up for f-class or bench rest type shooting, but i dont do that so its all S/a for me

Like Jason said get the modded mags and notch your action, its a simple process. you can buy the mags from gap ready to roll, and a dremel will take care of the feed ramp.

also, bergers can and will shoot with a jump, you dont have to kiss or jam them into the lands it might take a might more load development but the will work, in fact my bud's gun is shooting better with a jump vs. jaming them in the lands.

We just got the mags in and are building bottom metal now. We should have them available shortly. The mags came in just a touch over 3.16'' inside
