I am trying to calibrate a Kestrel unit and I just found out that there are two different Barometric Pressure figures that I can choose from. One is the Barometric Altimeter Setting and the other one is the Mean Sea Level Pressure.

Which of these two units should I use to calibrate the instrument?

After reading the article that blklabs suggested, I finally understood what was I doing wrong. I also noticed that, because of my location (Denver), this Kestral unit will not let me input the Station Pressure reading. It will not allow me to input any pressure under 25.00 inHg. It seems like I am limited to using the corrected or Altimeter Setting.

BTW, THANK YOU blklabs for the link!! This article helped clear any questions about barometric pressure and density altitude that I had.

Kestrel is supposed to output Station Pressure, not input it. If you know what it is beforehand, why spend money on a Kestrel - cheaper wind meters do exist.

It seems to me that you're not using Kestrel optimally. But then it's your money and your operation, have a blast at it.

I use a location with a known altitude, like an airport (or R.O.), then take the measured barometer at the airport (or NAS nearby). Mine was not set-up correctly at the factory.

Graham, out of curiosity - how big was the pressure/altitude error in your Kestrel unit as it came from the factory?
