EDIT -I am looking for a prefit barrel

Nearly ready to order my barrel for my stevens 200 build. 7-mm-08 is my caliber of choice. For starters I am not a competition shooter or will be. This build is for a nice plinking gun and my hunting rifle and nothing more.

I am torn between a 20" tube or 24-26". I like the compact feel of a 20" but just not sure how much I am giving up velocity wise. I will rarely see 600 yds more like 200-300 90% of the time.

Thinking about going with a light to medium varmint contour around .800 -.850 at muzzle.

11* crown is something I was informed to be a good choice.

So I am torn between a Button rifled McGowen, CDI or a cut rifled Pac-nor or the like. I really need to stay at $385 or below for a finished barrel. So opinions on best bang for the buck barrel maker for this build?

Re: Which Brand of Barrel for 7mm-08 build?

I have received quotes for a benchmark for $380+ship, Pac-nor $355+ ship, McGowen $260 shipped (for 20") so far. I believe krieger is $405+ship also. Just unsure who to go with lol

Looks like barlein is $295+ ship. I didnt check them out but looks like it maybe a good choice with cut rifling and great price.

If you are not going to be shooting 600yds or farther then go 20". Contact Brunos Shooters Supply, they have good pricing and quick shipping. They carry several barrel brands.

How about Lawton ?

Stainless Steel: Standard 28 in. $25.00 per in. after 28 (1.250)
1.250 $305.00 8 Groove $330.00
1.350 $360.00 8 Groove $385.00
1.450 $375.00 8 Groove $410.00

Re: Which Brand of Barrel for 7mm-08 build?

Another question. Since I plan to go 20" would I be better getting a standard 28" or whatever it is and have someone cut and crown? Or just order it by my specs to start with from the maker?

Some places may have a 7-08 but it's going to be much longer then 20" so can brunos cut and crown or do I need to find someone to do that?

Re: Which Brand of Barrel for 7mm-08 build?

I would avoid Lawton. That place seems to have major problems at the moment. I would buy a barrell longer than what you want it to be. Have your gunsmith cut and crown it to ur liking.

Re: Which Brand of Barrel for 7mm-08 build?

Sounds like you want a finished (chambered) pre-fit barrel for that price. Some of the prices you you gave for the upper end barrels are just the price for a blank. Add chambering and finishing from a good smith, then the price doubles. If you want a finished barrel for that price, contact Jim at Nothland. He carries Shilen, McGowan & Criterion. If you`re not dead set on a 7-08 (which is a good round IMO), you can get a new factory Savage takeoff in 308 / varmint contour. They are darn good shooters for a factory tube

Re: Which Brand of Barrel for 7mm-08 build?

My barrel hasn't arrived yet but I got a 26" Bull with a 1 in 8 twist from Mcgowen onsale for xmas. It's a CM but my total was 223 for the barrel and 15.00 for shipping. (ordered jan 30 should be here sometime this week or first of next week)

If I were you I'd go with the following.

A Mcgowen 22" CM (they are hand lapped) in a Heavy varmet contour with a 1 in 9 twist unless you want to run the 162 or heavier then I'd go with the 1 in 8. Hornady 162 amax recommend a 1 in 8 twist right on the box.

Or a CBI from northlander for $250 and have it shortened and recrowned.

I'd go with a recessed crown instead of the 11 degree for one reason. A dinged up crown equals rounds all over the place. Military snippers run a recessed crown because you can beat the heck out of it compaired to an 11 degree and it won't effect your shot. So go recessed and don't worry about it. Or go 11 degree and get a crown and scope protector and you're set.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Which Brand of Barrel for 7mm-08 build?

My Pac Nor barreled 7mm08 used to be 25". It's 20" now. If I ever shoot the barrel out, my new one will also be 20".

While you're at it, you might consider getting the barrel threaded and ordering a thread protector or something to put on it. The extra money that it costs will be roughly the same as the round-trip shipping that you'd pay if you decide to have it threaded later on. Think of it as a 200% investment :^)

You're going to love your rifle.

Enjoy,
Bob

I went with Benchmark for a 6.5-.284 Norma. Same price they quoted you. Should show up any day now. My research has me very optimistic.
