Gunsmithing Which Depth Micrometer?

[AR-10 Shooter]

I'm looking at Starrett models 449, 440 and 450. Which model do you recommend?

Thanks in advance for advice and candid comments I'll be getting!

The 450 is a dial mic so it's not going to be as precise as the barrel and thimble models. the 440 has a non rotating blade and the 449 does not, that's personal preference and application. If you already have calipers you can buy a depth base attachment to use with your existing calipers.

If you practice it for a while you don't need an attachment. Close your calipers and look at the topabove where the jaws come together. If they are good quality that should look like 2 pieces ground even and flush. That's a good point to use.

For small holes, look at the back end where the caliper slides against the rack. If you open the jaws a little you can see the step. I use that a lot to measure hole depth and other steps that don't have to be to .001" For that I use the depth mic. My Starrett depth mic is a good one. But even after all these years when I get the box out I have to remind myself that they read "backward".

I have several sets. Starret, Brown and Sharpe, Lufkin, and Fowler. They are all good sets. Never had a problem with any of them. Some have different size bases for different applications. I prefer the old Lufkin, but that is because it was my first set. I have some caliper bases, but they are harder to get consistent measurements.
