Aloris makes a few different internal threading bars, and I am trying to figure out which one to order for truing up the internal threads on a Remington 700 action.

The ATB-1R has a 1/2" diameter shank with a 7/8" max reach

The ATB-2R has a 3/4" diameter shank with a 1-1/2" max reach.

My head is telling me the 1/2" diameter shank will be easier to clear the radius, but the 7/8" reach will be cutting it close (depth wise). My other head is telling me I need the 1-1/2" reach, but that the 3/4" shank might cause radius clearance issues.....

Which one are you using?

Or, if you are not using an Aloris threading bar, which one are you using?

I grind my own. I have a few that I use depending on the application, most are ground with 3/8 hss blanks. I have several ground for threading toward the headstock, one for threading with the toolpost moving away from the headstock, chuck running in reverse.

I have some very small ones I ground from 1/4 hss drill rod for threading small diameter holes.

Iscar SIR 0375 K11 or SIR 0500 L11 bars with 11IR A 60 IC908 inserts. I tend to use the smaller bar more often. Both bars will take the same inserts. The IC908 coatings work well with slower manual machine speeds.

You guys are awesome.. Thank you so much for the replies! I too would like some more info about which specific Horn USA threading bar Chad is using.... Looks like a cool company, but a specific model for a manual lathe and an Aloris CXA tool holder would be nice brother!.

Sandvik Cxs series for the little stuff. It's an insert style where the piece is all in itself.

I'm bout 2.5 sheets to the wind in the DIA airport right now so the bigger one escapes me. It's a lugged style "horn" type insert.

If your running manual consider a harder grade of carbide. Itll be sharper and require less tool pressure to cut. Especially for the squeaker finish passes. Youll give up some life though.
