Which is better and cheaper 6.5 or .308?

6.5 will be more accurate by far in comparison to .308, especially with much less kick. 6.5 is one bad ass round....I would only get the 6.5 if you're going to be reloading. As for factory, most times than not 6.5 factory will be more expensive than .308 ammo.
as for reloading, about the only downfall is getting the brass,,,, and maybe somewhat the bullets depending on current supply. 6.5 brass is hornady specific, but other manufactures are coming out with the same brass & you can re-neck other types of brass if you want to go through all of that BS.... They have good stock of 6.5 bullets at my local big box dealer. 6.5bullets are a tad bit less than .308 depending on the style of bullets. As for example, 6.5 amax bullets are just a tad bit less than .308 amax, but not much. Once you have the brass, then you will save money as it will take less powder also.
like I said before, it really is about the brass.... 6.5 creedmoor hornady brass is going for $34.99 per 50pcs = ~ .70cent each. Once you have the brass, then you will save on powder and a little bit on the bullets. Primers is a moot issue.
as for .308 brass, I can get 500pcs of once fired lake city for $120 shipped = .24cent each,,,,, but will take more powder & will be just under the performance of the 6.5round.

Well, better is pretty subjective. Better at what would be my question to you, then I could give a better answer. Cheaper is less subjective. $33 for GMM in .308 is more than $26 for Hornady 140 AMAX Creed. And if you reload, then I would say that it depends on what brass you use for the .308. Winchester brass is cheap, and good at $20 per 50. Creed brass is also good, but only one manufacturer that isn't super expensive, Hornady at $35 per 50. 6.5 bulets are a little less and you will use similar charges, so no powder savings. Same with primers. All prices from Midway. You can find GMM for $23 at Palmetto, so there are better prices out there. I just used the same place to price it all. Overall I doubt that one is much cheaper than the other. I will say that ballistically the Creed will smoke the .308. But, they will both kill game and paper just fine. One will just do it with less wind drift, and energy.
If you go 260 then you aren't as limited on your brass selection. The only downside that I can gather with going the 260 route is that it can be harder to reach the lands and stay in magazine length unless you have a fairly tight chamber (much like 308) where as with a 6.5 creedmoore you're going to pretty much always be able to reach the lands within magazine length.
If you're reloading and comparing apples to apples 260 is going to be a bit cheaper usually and its going to buck the wind better. However when you factor in barrel swaps more often the prices probably even out.

If I was just starting out and wasnt invested in either and had to get setup for one over the other I would go to one of the 6.5 rounds in a heart beat, either 6.5 Creedmor or 6.5x47L. I think the 6.5x47L is going to be my next build once I get this Rem700 308 done and get my stock of 308 components back up to where I am comfortable. I have had an MWS in .308 for almost 2 years now is the main reason I went with a Rem700 in 308 because I was already semi invested in the round.
