Hunting & Fishing Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

While in the field? Or prior to leaving?

I use a Warthog sharpener to put an edge on my field knife before I hunt. If it's an extended trip, I usually keep a small handheld grinding stone I bought from a local store in my pack, although I'm not sure of the brand.

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

I use a grizzly T10097, i replaced the wet stone with a true 2000 grit Japanese water stone and grind it to an almost mirror finish. After that I take the burr's off with the leather wheel, and OMG it's ready to SHAVE YOUR ASS!

In the field I carry a small lanskey kit, ya know the one with the ceramic and course stones in it? It's light, and packs well in the ruck sack.

All my hunting knives are KOA's (Knives of Alaska) and hold a WICKED edge.

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

Left the house without a good knife but when the deer went down and I realized all I had was a dull knife and one of the boy's hatchets in the Jeep I saw my folding utility knife with razor blades. Have to say it was a nice little discovery and no need to sharpen, just pull and replace blade...

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

I have one that fits on my key chain that is awesome. I bought it for $5 at an army surplus store in MO that is now out of business. It has Stirling stamped on it with a phone number and P.O. box in southern Missouri. It looks fairly similar but not the same and what I found on the internet as a Sterling knife sharpener out of CA. I would recommend getting one. You do not realize how convenient it is to have a sharpener on your key chain. It is also convenient for field use since it is extremely lightweight and compact.

That is very similar but not quite the same. That is the one out of CA, mine was made in MO, and mine has Stirling spelled with an I rather than an E. It is probably just as functional. P.M. me and I will send you the phone number and address on it.

I like sog knives. I have gutted skinned and deboned a mule deer and it stayed sharp. since sog is local, I can also take it in and they resharpen it when it needs it. It is also pretty light and compact. Great knife. To sharpen my other knives which are cheapos I just bought a cheapo sharpener.

Tough to beat a heart felt whine, fueled with insecurity.

Personally,I'd whirl S30V and focus on it's heat treat, profile and bevel...mainly because it bears far more fruit than Turd Polishing. If only because I've a few hundered blades to choose from and they ain't all "equal".

'Tis a shame you are too stupid to subtend a KOA Ulu's sizing value,as per Critterly Magnitude...though that constant does very much add to the inherent humor!

Just sayin'.</div></div> Ulu's: Good friend just showed one to me that his father used often. Outstanding fit and natural motion for anything from skinning to choppin onions. For myself it was a wonderful awakening.
At times, ignorance is not bliss...

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

Looks like a real one to me. At least it looks just like mine.

I always sharpen up on the spyderco before I go out. I've never needed to re-sharpen in the field.

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

Someone should write up a good how-to on knife sharpening. I've always tried but was never any good at it with simple stones you get at the store.

I got a Buck Omni Hunter that's held it's edge through cleaning a few squirrels (lopping off heads and such) but it's got a few nicks in it.

Said knife:

Wish I had something a bit smaller. I played with one of those Bear Grylls (sp?) knives at Walmart tonight and the thing barely had an edge on it, even for a Gerber. Go figure.

Wish I had a nice 3" folder for Monday (deer rifle season in PA), but my Omni will be in my pack.

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

I use a 30 year old hand-me-down. Dont know the brand but it has two 8" stick stones that fit into a board at the proper angle and you just hold the knife blade straight down and slice away switching side as you go. It is quick and works really well. I have tried the smaller hand helds that do both sides at once and while they work the edge has never been as good.

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

I have never been able to master a flat stone. By the time I'm mad enough to quit my blade is worse than when I started. Picked up a Spyderco Sharpmaker and it works very well for me.

Re: Which knife sharpener do you use for hunting?

Perhaps it is because everything I use is s30v, but why do you need to sharpen in the field? I get my s30v knives razor sharp with a 30 degree inclusive back bevel and a 40 degree primary, and it is still sharp enough to shave after heavy use. I can't imagine trucking a sharpener around with me.
