Im torn in between getting an SPS Varmint or an SPS Tactical.

Does the varmint have the same contour barrel as the tactical?

I know the tactical has a hogue stock, but I dont know if the varmint would be better for shooting long range. I know it would have better velocity.

What should I do?

Thanks
Shay

Re: Which model 700?

In my opinion, all you're choosing from is barrel length. The Hogue stock isn't really free-floating as it's advertised. I handled a couple when I was looking for a rifle, and the fore end flexes and makes contact with the barrel. That was just from holding it, so I can't imagine it'll stay free floating if you put a bipod on it.

Hey shay. They are both excellent rifles. The hogue is prolley the better choice but youve been on here long enough to know that you need to replace the stock and/or do a little work like some have and stiffen up the forend with some aluminum rods. The tac and varmint are prolley one of the best values out there. If you have a little extra I would also check out the Savage 10 Precision Carbine which comes with a 20" varmint contour barrel with accutrigger and accustock for around $750. I will be buying one soon for my 14yr old son

I think Ill go with varmint for the extra velocity and have it cut to 22 or 23 and have it threaded. How much does that usually cost?
