General advice please ... and a math check.
The rifle is a TRG42 in 338LM. Scope is a S&B 5-25x56 PMII LP MSR CM CCW ... still in the box, haven't even fondled it yet and won't until I get home from deployment in a few months. If these questions sound stupid, like I've never looked through the scope or twisted the turrets, that's because I haven't.
I also bought a Spuhr St-4701 (7 mil / 24 MOA cant) mount at the same time, but I'm starting to wonder if I should've bought the ST-4801 (13 mil / 44.4 MOA). The TRG-42's integrated 17mm dovetail has no cant built into it.
I'm unclear as to how much elevation I can dial into the scope. Looking for some education here too ...
Depending on which S&B product page I look at, it appears I have either 26 or 27.3 mil of elevation travel, or 89-94 MOA. I've been told that's all up I can dial in from the zero, but Ive also been told (more convincingly) that only half is up and half is down from the center.
So with roughly 45 MOA from the scope plus 24 MOA from the mount, I'd have effectively 69 MOA of elevation to dial in. Per my ballistic calculator, that's enough to get out to about 1700y with 250gr Scenars at 2950 fps.
If I use the full ~90 MOA figure for the scope, that's 114 MOA and good for 2100y, plenty of distance for me. Honestly, I have no illusions regarding my ability to hit things a mile away (yet
), so that'll surely be enough for me for quite a while yet.
It looks like using the ST-4801 mount (44.4 MOA) would put a 100y zero at the very edge of the scope's internal adjustment. Is this a problem? Obviously this isn't a 100y rifle, but I'd do some load development at that distance.
I have easy access to a 1000y range close to my house, where the majority of my shooting will be. But every so often I can get out to the desert and can shoot as far as i want. Thus far, I've only shot the TRG42 at 1000y (with a SWFA HD 5-25) but I'm eager to get out further. At least, subject to how much ammo I want to waste flailing away at those ranges.
Bottom line, should I just mount it on the ST-4701 and go shooting, or would I be better off with the ST-4801?
Please feel free to correct any of the math or other assumptions that I botched above, too.
Thank you.
