I'll be trying out a McMillan A-5 and an AICS 1.5 stock soon, but I'm looking to pick up a Remington 700 of some type to put in the stock.

Since I won't be using the stock anyways, which Remington 700 should I get? I don't plan on shooting all the way out to 1000 yards that often so even 20" barrels are fine and possibly preferable.

Seems most of the popular Remingtons suggested here are...

Remington 700 SPS Tactical
Remington 700 SPS Varmint
Remington 700P
Remington 700P LTR
Remington 700 5-R

I went SPS-V with a B&C Tactical Medalist on it. Very nice shooting rifle, but if given no budget, definitely would have gone 5r.

Alright... so it's between SPS Tac and 5R now.

I can get a SPS Tactical from Budsgunshop for $560ish...
I can get a 5-R for $1000ish.

How much can I get back from selling the stocks for the SPS Tac compared to the 5-R?

Is the only difference between the 2... finish and rifling?

I don't reload (don't have the time) so I plan on just shooting 168gr FGMM. I'm guessing after I sell the stocks, there will be about a $300 difference... I'm assuming the 5-R shoots better out of the box.

You can probally get $50-$75 for the SPS Tactical stock and around mabey $275-$325 for the 5R's stock.

Both will shoot very well out of the box.

The barreled action of the 5R is stainless steel, not sure about the Tactical but it might be bead blasted?

The cheapest one, since they all have heavy barrels, and you are changing the stock. Then buy Good glass and LOTS of Good ammo.

5R, though I will have to say that I have seen the SPS-V be pretty accurate in just the plain ole' stock that comes with it. If you get the 5R, you can probably sale off the stock without too much difficulty to recoup some of your costs in it.

Re: Which Remington 700 if I'm going to swap out stock

I bought a Rem 700 Light Varmint Stainless Fluted and replaced the flimsy model POS stock with a Boyd's Laminate. It solved all the inaccuracy problems. I sold the stock on eBay for $125 and paid $200 for the Boyd's so I was out only $75 for the upgrade.

Here's a pic.
