Headed to the local gun store today to pick up a Rem 700 to build over time.
They have so many models out now and twist rates etc, I'm nut sure what would be the best base rifle to by to start the build?

I'm wanting a 18"-20" in .308.

Is the 5R barrel the way to go for shooting 168-175's?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Which Remington 700

Yes there is a ton of posts on this if you search, but most are dated.

What are your thoughts on the FN rifle?
I want to get a detachable magazine installed sometime down the road.
Does the FN already come with one?

I'm wanting to use an AICS stock on the build.

Just saw some of your reviews, good stuff. tagged for later

You sure about that?

I only ask because we have three of them.

May want to check your facts before correcting someone.

Re: Which Remington 700

I love my FN's but if your wanting to use an AI chassis then the FN is out. I have yet to see someone modify an AICS for the FN action. It would be nice tho!

You can get FN's with a DBM but it is FN's own mags not AI. So you will have to swap out the FN standard dbm bottom metal for something like CDI's bottom metal.

There are some super deals on some custom sticks in the for sale section, with few of them already in the AICS.

Re: Which Remington 700

OK I've decided on getting the LTR for my first build.
(haven't found a GAP 20" for sale on the hide in a while)
Do you think this is a good choice?
The first thing I want to do is put a oversized bolt on it and a detachable magazine. I'm wanting to use AIC mags. Which BM would you suggest?
WIll they all work with the HS factory stock?

I have never installed BM so I'm assuming any smith can do this in short order?

Thanks

Re: Which Remington 700

They make the new acc I think it's called. 1-10 twist 20" barrel and threaded for suppresor. Sorry to add to the confusion. But if you are going to shoot out to a 1000 yards you can use the 175 and heavier bullets. Eventualy when I buy a new rifle that's the one I would like to have. If I ever fell into the cash I'd love an AI.

I think gilberts guns had them for 650

Re: Which Remington 700

I did not know that.
I lear something new every day.
I really like the fluted barrel on the LTR, but this gun is $300 less.
The LTR has a 1/12 twist. Will it not handle the 175's as good as the 1/10 twist?
I'm fairly new to long range shooting.
I have 1000+ 168's and 500 M118 175 so I should probably get a barrel that will shoot those the best.

Re: Which Remington 700

It seems the 1/10 would be the ideal twist rate for 175's.
I wish they made the LTR in a 1/10".
That thing is light!

http://www.shilen.com/calibersAndTwists.html8" for bullets heavier than 220gr.
- 10" for bullets up to 220gr.
- 12" for bullets up to 170gr.
- 13"* Ratchet rifled 4 groove
- 14"* for bullets up to 168gr.
- 15"* for bullets up to 150gr.
- 17"* for bullets up to 125 gr.

Re: Which Remington 700

Based on what you are looking for, the SPS Tactical AAC-SD seems to be the ideal rifle for you: 20" barrel and 1:10 twist.
The stock leaves a bit to be desired, but if you're thinking of going AICS, why spend more money now on a stock you are going to replace?
The AICS also gives you a stock and DBM in one upgrade, instead of buying a stock and a seperate DBM and having to have it inletted at an additional cost.

SPS Tactical AAC-SD, AICS chassis, and maybe an aftermarket trigger (I'm pretty happy with mine, but most people seem not to like the factory one) and you will have one bad-ass rig!

Also, check the "commercial sales" section for info on a factory rebate on the SPS. I read something about it, but don't know all the details.

Re: Which Remington 700

Ok so if I order the AICS stock I'm good to go with the BM?

Does the barreled action just drop in to the AICS stock with no fitting required?
I think you are correct, this is a hell of a starting point.

Re: Which Remington 700

The AICS would be all you need. It comes with a 5rd mag, and you can purchase additional 5 or 10 rd mags for it.
It also has bedding block thet attatches to the action, so no additional bedding is needed. Just add your barreled action!
This is actually a cost effective way to go if you compare it to buying a decent stock (HSP, Manners or McMillan), buying a DBM (Badger M5 or similar) and having the stock inleted for the M5.
The only thing I would suggest is to try an AICS before you buy, as I've heard they are on the heavy side, and not everyone finds them comfortable.
If the setup works for you, you're good to go! There's really not much else to do besides that than shoot it till it needs rebarreling, and then send it out for a barrel and blueprinting.

Re: Which Remington 700

I'm wanting to build a light weight tactical style rifle.
The AICS may be too heavy for this particular build.
Are there other stocks that are plug and play withe BM that doesn't need smith work to take AICS mags?

The GAP (and wait) are starting to look more and more like a better option.
I wanting to keep my optic budget as high as I can. Anything over $2000 cuts into my optic funds.

Re: Which Remington 700

Unfortunately, if light weight is what you're looking for, the AICS is probably not for you. For a light weight tactical rifle, here's a good option:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=486263
Basically a lighter version of the stock on my SPS. Also has an aluminum bedding block built in. As far as a DBM, Wyatt's makes a bottom metal for a det. mag that is a drop in for the B&C tactical stocks. The only downside is they use a different mag from the AICS. If you prefer the AICS mags, you can go with Badger M5, Hooper Ordnance or CDI precision. I like the Hooper DBM myself, a bit cheaper than the Badger, but still built solid and if you send your stock to them, they will inlet it for (I believe)$45. For the stock, DBM and the inletting (including shipping) you're probably looking at around $600-625, still considerably less than the AICS. If you send the Stock to Hooper, you could send your bolt at the same time and have the knob done, and add a Rifle Basix trigger and you'd be right around the cost of the AICS alone.

Re: Which Remington 700

A 700 Police will get you far ahead of the game right off the bat. You can always have the barrel cut, crowned, and threaded if you like. Plus you get a decent stock. The long beaver tail forend makes for good shooting prone or when supported on a ruck or other solid object.

I get them in all the time. Most have the barrel cut to 18-22" and are used as a suppressor host.

Re: Which Remington 700

thanks guys for all the information.
So I should probably be looking for the SPS rather than the LTR if I'm going to be shooting the heavier weight bullets (175's) due to the twist rates?

Re: Which Remington 700

Just to clarify, The SPS Tactical AAC-SD has the 1:10 twist.
The standard SPS Tactical has a 1:12. If you're looking for the faster twist, make sure you get the AAC-SD version.
