Which Remington Bolt 308 for Christmas? Used 40-XC or new 700 Milspec

I want a 308 under the tree. Has to be Remington, 24-27 inch barrel, The heavier the better (prone/w bipod and bench). Range- 300-600 yd. Top to spend about, $1200. I was thinking of a used 40-XC but no history is available for the rifle and I'm thinking since its a over the course rifle, its probably shot out. Whats my next best choice? 700P, Milspec or 700 Varmint SF?

Of those four choices a shiny new 24" 5R is easily the top pick.... then 700P.

I too would second guess the used rifle with no history and probably no warranty.

A shot out 40x would outshoot my pos 5r i got. What stock on the 40x? My 5r got the barrel changed for a bartlien and needed the action trued. At least the 40x action is trued. What trigger does the 40x have, probably better than a x pro.

Go with the 40X ! It'll still beat a new 700.

Go with the 40X, they are great. If its a cross the course gun with a clip slot, then even better (IMHO).

The majority of the new 5r's are .5moa guns. That's what I'd buy, or a FN SPR from taccord for a little more.

The 40X is a newer one with stainless receiver and a synthetic position stock. No sights, 20MOA Falcon scope base. Stock 40x trigger. No shooting history, looks mint.
