Can someone recommend a set of gauges to measure shoulder bump? I have been told the hot day setup works good and others have said Sinclair gauges work good.
I really like the Whidden one that fully encapsulates the case with the screw on lid. It not only measures overall headspace but gives a standard Go, no go reference as well.
I myself liked the Sinclair setup better, they make them to go off shoulder angle and dia where Hornady's are diameter specific.
I personally use Whidden case gauges today for all cases I shoot, kind of pricey though.
I've got a hodge-podge of gauges to measure shoulder bump. On many of my medium sized cases the headspace reference on the shoulder is 0.4" across. So I took a 10mm auto case and shortened it so that it had a little thicker wall and am able to measure head space with it as well as shoulder bump.
I like the RCBS precision mic, similar to the Whidden. They are a little slower to use and not cheap but they can measure bullet seating depth and shoulder length and they are not sensitive to shoulder angle. I have 5.56, .308, and 300wm.
The Hornady headspace gauge kit pictured above works great. That and their bullet comparator kit, to measure base to ojive, live beside my rock chucker. My most used tools by far. Several YouTube videos on usage. Very simple.
