I have a chance to purchase due to limited funds for a medium range rifle (hope out to 1000) either 1 stevens mdl 200 in 308 new, or a mauser K98 sporterized in 25/06 with a shillen barrell, weaver bases, and bushnell 3200 scope. I don't know alot about either mauser actions or the 25/06 cartridge but am looking to get a starter bolt action for my daughter (15, jrrotc/CMP competetive air rifle shooter/ rimfire competitor). also if you have any other ideas on a budget shooter yell them out. Thanks in advance Jeff

Re: which would you buy?

I just got off the phone with the smith who has the mauser and he said he took the rifle out today and benched it, he didn't like how it was grouping so he will rebarrell it with a shillen heavy barrell, what would you recommend for cartridge choice? I will also have him acraglass it for me while it is there.

Re: which would you buy?

If you handload, a 6.5x.284 is light recoiling flat shooting and w/140gr. TSX's one heckuva deer killer. Again on the reloading a .260? The good ole 6.5x55 is always a possiblity..which are nearly endless. Of course more "common" chamberings would probably resell to "the masses" easier. That Mauser though, is a really good deal. A Shilen barrel is right around $300 alone, a Mauser action (or rifle for the action) is gonna cost nearly $250 by itself, and the Bushnell 3200 is a good scope for the $. You can't go wrong, that is why I threw the offer @ ya. Good luck.
