Whidden Bullet Pointer & Montour Meplat Trimmer

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

6.5,

Trim then point. I have the Whidden tool, but a different trimmer. You don't say what brand of bullet you are using, but sorting by OGL beforehand will save some grief. Don't be surprised if you take off as much as 0.020" to make them all consistent with some brands of bullets.

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

I have been pointing first....then trimming, then pointing a 2nd time per:

Whidden Pointing Tool Review

so far...the 6.5mm 139 gr. Lapua Scenar have had a LOWER deviation than the Berger's.

.so far out of 500....only 7 had +0.001" greater ogive dimension.

after the 1st (200)..I thought man am I wasting my time sorting these??

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

I think that with that lot # of Scenars, you're wasting time going any further. I might do 25-50 and see where they fall. If they're all pretty close, then move on, life's too short to be sorting stuff that's pretty much nuts on.

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

I'm interested in the results of pointed 139s, I have heard that they can't be pointed due to jacket thickness, I'm watching.

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

On Left = Unadulterated 139 gr. Lapua Scenar

On Right = Pointed, Meplat Trimmed and Deburred, Pointed 139 gr. Lapua Scenar

Bullet on left Meplat diameter = 0.053"

Bullet on right Meplat diameter = 0.030"

one unexpected BENEFIT of the thicker jackets on the Lapua's versus the thinner Berger's....

.....it is just about impossible to BULGE them.....

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

Well fuck me running, now I need a meplat trimmer for my Giraud, and a pointing die, how about a range report pointed v unpointed at 1k

+1 and I laughed my ass off when I read this haha!

Range report from this experiment would be great!

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

What I'm really interested in is...........what the calculated BC is based on actual shooting, when I plug info into my Ballastic programs everything is known but the actual BC, the manufactures numbers always seem high, I use .475 for 175SMKs and .480 for 178AMAXs, both going 2650-2680, your results at range will be eagerly awaited 6.5WSSM

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

..looking like at least 10 days before I do any testing..waiting to get my rifle back together...

..here is an updated pic I took outside..macro shots are tough if the lighting isn't correct:

notice the meplat diameter on the "pointed" bullet versus the untouched "stock" bullet

I just did (100), only (3) needed trimming then pointing again...

Re: Whidden Bullet Pointer & Motour Meplat Trimmer

6.5,

Been out for a couple weeks. Lapua really tightened up on OGL variations, so you're right about sorting not being necessary. Not worth it if variation is less than +/-0.003".

I'm familiar with Whiddens recommendations, just found 95% of the benefit can be had without the first pointing on quality bullets, plus the amount trimmed from the bullet is reduced.

427,

In .223, .243, 6.5, and .308 simply correct your BC for 3/4 or 1 MOA of elevation reduction at all distances, since pointing reduces the correction by the amounts listed. Trimming reduces vertical spread within a group at any distance, about 0.1 to 0.2 MOA in my experience.
