I agree. Mike Rowe sang it once that I saw on TV and actually did a good job. He is a trained opera singer so he has a leg up on most of the up and comers who get whored out for TV and "sing" the national anthem.

The X factor and other talent shows are made and meant for the singer to add flare and show vocal range. Otherwise it would be the same boring notes. I personally just have a distaste to soul/hip hop and would rather enjoy a slash or jimmy hendricks variation. However, I will say when it is done at a baseball game or done as in tribute of respect embelishments should be kept at a bare minimum if even at all. (the song should not go on for 5+mins). Keep the flare and "originality" on talent shows where its wanted and looked for

With all the butchering of the Star Spangled Banner I been hearing about, it makes me glad I don't watch sports or any other event where it can potentially be mutilated. Maybe I'm young and naive or maybe I don't get the route of entertainment in the present day, but last time I checked, The Star Spangled Banner sounded just fine when sang normally and without the addition of other lyrics.
