Building a housing development on a manmade island on an earthquake zone in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Wonder what the insurance rates will be?

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco city planners have approved a $1.5 billion neighborhood to be built on Treasure Island, located in San Francisco Bay between the city and Oakland.

The plan includes 8,000 residential units and a 450-foot high-rise on the island.

Critics say the man-made island would not fare well in an earthquake and that the project would increase traffic on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Supporters say developing the 400 acres in the middle of San Francisco Bay is a unique opportunity.

San Francisco's Planning Commission voted 4-3 on Thursday. It will next be considered by the Board of Supervisors.

If the city or state didn't have to pay anything into it, and will collect property taxes, then I say go for it. That's a neighborhood for folks with more money than smarts. Go get 'em.

Only an idiot would live there, so why would you care what happens to idiots? I care not what idiots do, unless it somehow effects myself.

Valid point, but consider the clean up costs AFTER the earthquake and whose tax dolars will be used. Of course on a positive note it will be so expensive only wealthy well heeled gays will be able to afford it.......

That's what I used to think about people who chose to live in a city situated 12-20 feet below sea level, surrounded by levies built by the lowest bidder, until Katrina...

Yet when the disaster happened the blame fell not on the people who lived there (And were well advised to get out) or those actually responsible for the city of New Orleans, or the State of Louisiana, but on the person who declared the disaster 2 days before it hit!

Yet the "victims" in the city still did nothing to evacuate...

And this is referring to a hurricane where only the stupidest, laziest, most contemptible people, make no effort whatsoever to prepare, often with days of advance notice!

So yes, I think it is a monumentally stupid idea and the tax payers in the solvent states will be forced to pick up the tab for this, much as the solvent people are now paying for the grand experiment in home loans to deadbeats and the gutless lenders who sold them mortgages.

BIG +1 queequeg! Preach on, brother. You just know that everyone else will have to pay for their stupidity because God forbid someone is held accountable for their own decisions.

I knew someone might play with what I wrote, but I wasn't in the mood for a long response. Either way, the .gov is going to spend/waste everything it can, so I have backed off on caring so much. Society has become complacent to how things are, and while it really upset me for a long time I am now learning to forget/ignore them, and concentrate on things directly affecting myself.

I only hope that when things do go bad, that as many as possible die, so as to clean the gene pool. Sadly our 'free healthcare' will probably save them. :p

I knew there were death panels but I was unaware that reanimation of the dead was part of the plan!

I don't know how accurate THIS is, but it is worth the read for those that have never seen it in practice.

And generally, yes this is the way works - the Feds give the asset to the municipality, the cash strapped municipality is approached by private interest, the private interest makes a ton of cash, and the municipality expands both their tax roles, budgets, and influence into citizens' every day lives.

This takes more political horsepower than most of us can conceive of to come out the other end as the developer of record.

And yes - very bad idea.

    Good luck

    QQ,

When saving someone the person must not be dead yet, only injured, otherwise that is known as raising the undead, IE zombies. :p

25% of the units will be "low income" housing so you're going to be on the hook to help pay for a chunk of it even if you don't get to live there.

So we taxpayers who could never afford to live there get to pay for building it, subsidize the inhabitants living there, and then clean up the mess after it sinks into the Bay. Soounds good to me.
