Given the advantages of short barrels for close quarters work, I have always wondered by suppressors were so long. Delta P makes wide and short designs. Why aren't more made like that?

TDS Specter has a 1" reflex section and only ads 4" to the end of a barrel. Picture below is on a 10.5" barrel.

We like large diameter suppressors because it gives us a lot more room to set up a reflex section and extra room to get the majority of the gas off the center line.

While I will freely admit to not being any kind of suppressor design expert, the length could have to do with the number/spacing of baffles. While internal volume of a suppressor is going to be one component of the noise suppression capability of a given design, the number of baffles may well play into it as well... otherwise, those make-shift oil filter suppressors (er, solvent traps) would offer some absolutely stellar suppression numbers, as the internal volume of an oil filter could easily be quite large (comparatively).

Or I could be full of shit... you decide.
