Wich is better? .300 Win Mag or .300 WSM?

Re: Wich is better? .300 Win Mag or .300 WSM?

I would say the main advantage of the 300WM is that it will push the heavier bullets a little better. There are also more brass choices for the 300WM, but Lapua brass is not an option for either unless you get lucky and run across some for the 300WM, however I wouldn't hold my breath on that. The 300WSM burns less powder and can fit in a short action if that matters to you. If you are going upwards of a mile for your long range shooting, I personally would choose the 300WM.

300 WM allows you to shoot the heavier (200+ grains) projos. These have higher BC and therefore are more capable of taking advantage of the long range of the magnum cartridges. The draw back obviously is the belt case and therefore has its own issues.

300 WSM, shorter case, less powder, and a slightly more restricted choices in terms of heavy weight projos.

Depending on the distance you want to shoot, each cartridge has its own pluses and drawbacks.

Thanks guys, I´ll be going with the .300 WM. Just wish they had left that god damned belt off there. I just WANT up to 1500 yards capability.

The belt is more pain in theory than reality. Headspace off the shoulder, and bump .001-.002" after firing and you'll be fine. If you load hot and have a tight chamber, you'll either need a Redding body die (to reduce diameter of the case above the belt), or in extreme cases the Willis collet die.

If you get a 26-30" barrel and load 208/210's long with H1000, keep your velocities sane, you MAY be able to get away with neck sizing only, if you wish. This simplifies things greatly.

1500 yds. really isn't that far for a properly prepared LR WM. I have steel set up at 1500 yds. and am running about 75% cold bore hits in varying conditions.

Either will be hammers at 1500yd. Put the 210 VLD, 208/225 Hornady's or a like minded bullet in front of either and you're set for hitting targets a long way away.

John's advice is spot on for the setup of a 300 WM. I've done a lot of work with the WSM case and find it to be a reasonable step up from the 308, though at this point I've been hot-rodding my 30-06 to get close to 300 WSM performance. Given the opportunity to built a WSM optimized for muzzle velocity with heavy bullets I'm sure I could outrun the 30-06 pretty handily.

I'd advise you to build both on a long action, stuffing the WSM into a short action is begging for disappointment.

If you want superior 1500yd performance over either of these and you really don't want to deal with the belt, then take a look at the 300 Acc. Int'l (aka the 30-375 Ruger) for something that has extremely good performance and still reasonable barrel life (unlike the wicked 300 RUM that can blow up the 220gr bullets and torch a barrel in under 1000rd).

Tom Sarver has a record holding case called the 300 Hulk which is based from 338 Lapua cases. Last I spoke to him about brass availability he was trying to finalize a contract with Jamison to make brass. The 300 Hulk has similar case capacity to the 30-375 Ruger.
