Will 1/4" AR plate hold up as targets?

I've got a chance to get some AR plate drops locally for a pretty good price. Will 1/4" hold up as pistol (.40, .45, .38 spl) targets at pistol ranges and for .223 and .308 for longer range? I'm thinking 400-1000 yds for the .308, or will it need to be doubled up? I'm not sure what grade of plate it is, so for now let's assume its AR500.

I had 3/8" plate on a swinging arm to help with recoil and at 300 yards my 308 was almost going completely through it. AR500 steel you might be ok but mine was just normal hardened steel. Needless to say the plate lasted about 3 range days and got upgrade to the 1.5" plate we have now. Kinda overkill but we won't have to replace it for a while.

Good luck,
Merritt

i know for a fact it will hold up for pistol at any range. i have a mild steel 1/4 plate that isnt affected by pistol. and i shot my 3/8 AR steel at 150 with zero affect so i think you might be ok with 1/4 at 400

.223 is too fast of a bullet for 1/4" steel especially at 100 yards. You "might" have an issue with the .308 at 100 yards. My advise is put the steel out to atleast 200 yards, and hang it from a chain. That way when the bullet impacts it, it will give. Think of it like a punching bag. No one will hit a solid block wall with their fist at 100%. But when its hanging from a chain, or a rope, you can punch all day and not get hurt. See where Im coming from?

That was the plan, I've been working on coming up with a way to hang it on chain from a couple of T posts. The closest I would shoot with a hi power is maybe 200 yards but probably farther. So it sounds like it may be good to go if it is in fact AR500, at least at longer ranges.

Try these link for a target stand.. I stole a few ideas and pieced them together from the guys who posted their pictures on here. My buddy is a welder, and I gave him an idea on what I was looking to have built. One stand will hold my 6"x6" AR500 targets, and the other stand will hold my 80% IPSC target. Do yourself a favor, and get 1/2" thick steel. It will last and last.. Its only about 10-15% more than what 3/8" AR500 costs..

Re: Will 1/4" AR plate hold up as targets?

1/4" mild steel will work for pistol. I had some that I used for awhile. I would bet that 1/4 AR500 would work for rifle at 100 but would start to bend quite fast.

1/4" steel and rifles don't mix at 100yds.
