Will a 22" barrel unduly limit 6.5x47 Lapua

I have the parts about to go to the smith for a new 6.5x47 Lapua rifle. I was wondering if I should have him finish the barrel at 22" or 24"? Normally 24" would be fine but I want to thread it and later put a suppressor on it. Magazine fed, will probably shoot 139gr Scenars or maybe 130gr VLDs.

I run a 22 inch barrel on my 6.5x47 Lapua with great results. It is defiantly the most accurate rifle I have owned other than my bench guns. Mine is threaded for a suppressor as well which is why I wanted the shorter length. The 123 gr Lapua Scenars work best for me and fly at about 2780 FPS. I have shot this to 1000 with no problems. I did try the 140 gr SMK's, 140 gr Berger's, and 130 grain Berger's but I get the best results with the 123's with a second going to the Berger 130's.

XLR:

Thanks for the info. What bullet was your barrel originally throated for? I'm now leaning towards the 130gr VLD or lighter, since the 130gr VLD seems to have almost the same G7 BC as the 139gr Scenar but can be driven faster.

People seem to be getting amazing velocities with this cartridge and RL-17. One poster on the accurateshooter.com/6mmbr.com message boards is getting 100fps more with ~42gr of RL-17 and a 139gr Scenar out of his 28" 6.5x47 than I'm getting with about the same load (actually 42.7gr) and bullet from my 28" .260 Rem.

I'll probably go for the 22" barrel.

My pig gun
6.5x47 20" broughton 5C
Mostly shot surpressed
123gr bullet scenar or Amax

Going that short i use RL17, it really does give ya some more fps, sounds and feels like shooting a break barrel bb gun

Need to finalize load this weekend, but it will run 2900-2950 pert easy, just depends wot shoots best

123gr bullets 20-22" barrel
130gr 24-26"
28 and longer 140gr

FYI
my 1k rig being built will run a 31" brougthon 6.5x47 140vld
2950fps or more is goal running H4350

x47 is a very efficient design, especially with RL17 or long barrels

I apologize for the delayed response, I have been in the mountains since Friday afternoon and just got back to a computer. My barrel was chambered with the 123's in mind; however, I found that with all my loads, my rifle liked about .010" jump. I have tried varget, benchmark and RL 17 and have had the best results with (39gr) RL17 and the 123 scenars.

FWIW, I have always like longer barrels but thought, what the heck, lets try something different. I love it. It is much more versatile and I don't see and major drawbacks for what I use this rifle for. Thanks
