I purchased one of these and seems to work great most of the time but from time to time it will over trim some cases almost .005 more than it should. Anyone ever have this issue? I don't have much time under my belt with it but it seems very simple to use so don't have a clue why some cases would be over trimmed!!!!! Any suggestions or tip would be greatly appreciated...

It's a very simple device. The only thing I can think of is that if you whack the case too hard into the case holder, it may be "squeezed" and lengthen in the body dimension. If it lengthens from being in the caseholder, the trimmer will remove extra material.

Try putting a case into the caseholder, measure it (don't trim). Give it a good whack. Measure it again. If it measures longer, there's your problem.

When I first got mine I had similar issue, I discovered it was technique, now when I do use it I look at the case and see no chips, I feel in the handle no resistance, and I listen for lack of cutter noise, the Wilson shell holder is just that, it has no bearing on length, all it does is hold the shell in position.

Well I will have to figure out a technique that will be consistant then! The trimmer is simple be design never gave it much thought. I will check to see if the case grows when I tap it in prior to trimming & Any tips that you have learned along with way that would help shorten the learning curve would be appreciated.

BTW the couple cases that are about .005 below there minimum can I still use them or should I just pitch them? There 223 cases and if I remember right they came in 1.469 after trimming.

Re: Wilson Stainless Micrometer Trimmer with Stand

When my wilson trimmmer trims .005 shorter than what I set it at, I find it is because the stop spindle has been pushed back some. I just set it back +.005 with the sinclair micrometer and Re-Tighten the locking screw for the spindle.

I don't know if the case actually grows in the trimmer case holder. I will look into this. But, I don't think it's a good idea to use the case holder as a base sizing die. The headspace might increase as well?? I usually just give the case a good push with my thumb in the holder and as long as the case doesn't rotate while trimming, then you are good.

Those .005 short cases will be fine. Just load them and shoot.

Thanks for your input I called sinclair today and the guy talked to me about the whole setup which I believe was spot on and he brought up a point as I'm using winchester brass that it's harder than lets say remmington brass, and everyone once in a while you will get a piece of brass that's not as hard as the rest and the cutter digs in and it does make sense to me. So I did another hundred cases tonight and 3 out of a hundred that happen. They were .003 deeper than the rest. Im not going to worry about it when my shooting ability and reloading ability goes up then I'll start using better brass.

So I'm going to chalk this up to this is the way it is and am going to deal with it!
